Challenge: October Free Study (Advanced Editing II)
Camera: Sony DSC-F717
Location: Clingman's Dome at the Great Smoky Mountains
Date: Oct 8, 2004
Aperture: f 4.0
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/500
Date Uploaded: Oct 28, 2004

A view from Clingmans Dome at the top of the Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee. It is the most visited park in the United States.

Cloned out one cloud and adjusted the color just a bit. Pretty much straight from the camera. Pretty amazing when you see it in person.

from the critique club:

A very difficult image to capture and in a scale of 1 to 10 you get an 8. The quality of this shooting is dependent on the strength of the sun and the opaqueness of the clouds. These variations change the contrast swing in these images. Many people miss the point with these images because they expect to see just a little more contrast, but when they stand physically at this vantage point, there is only a serene vastness with no eye squinting. It is like shooting on a cloudy day. I even named my implied lines, "cloudy day" and they asked me for more contrast. lol

The image is certainly a very good visual. There is a sense of depth and an acute sense of distance. The only minor item that breaks the spell is the white trail at the very top and to the right of the image.
The eye sweeps up and finds the left perfect but as the eyes travel towards the right it is jolted from the serene state. I suggest that after the use of any tool that the image be brought up tp 300 for close examination. here I would have simply cloned the area smooth.

But, even with this tiny flaw the image is lovely to look at because the image has enough interest to charm the viewer. You did a veru nice job.

This picture is really appealing and beautiful. But the bottom should have shown better.

I absolutely would crop out the green hills in front and just leave the blue tones.

They`ve certainly earned their name, going by your picture.
Beautiful gradiations.
It`s probably been mentioned but there`s a small halo type line showing above your last mountain ridge...it doesn`t look like oversharpening..more like a "magic wand" selection which wasn`t quite tight enough?
It`s a minor nitpick in an otherwise lovely image.
Well done and good luck.

This is a lovely scenery shot, though it doesn't feel, erm, full enough. the colours, shades, contrast feels just a bit too muted. i realise it's because of the mist, and the mist does add that kind of ambience, but i feel a little more contrast would bring it more alive. still very very nice though, bumping up to 6.

Classic study of distance and shading. Wonderfully executed. Ridgelines are interesting. Well done. Among my top picks.

Ahhh, home. This is the classic infinity shot of the Smoky Mtns. You've done as well as any I've seen with this one. Good job (makes me homesick)

Photos like this, of the Smokies, are always favorites of mine. I love the dreamy quality of the clouds.

Very pretty -- Did you try it by cropping out the mountains in the foreground? Seeing just the pastel mountains would be wonderful. The foreground catches and hold your eye.

Just simply spectacular! 10
The clear rich colored hill in the foreground is so perfectly placed. It brings an element of distance into the shot. I think by giving this a little mid tone compression you can bring out a little more of the detail on the ridges. This is just an incredible view and an excellent photograph!
