Haven't had a camera for a while now but recently got a good deal on a 2nd hand camera. Took some friends and youngsters to the mountains which is different from hikes I normally do with people who know the conditions. I missed some opportunities and this was the last shot I could take before it started bucketing. Fortunately the shutter was open at the time, yet the settings was not right for this BOLT of a strike which came as a shock. On the left just out of frame it hit the ground not 150m from us. The image was completely over exposed because I upped the ISO in order to get some light on the tent. This was perfect for earlier exposures but the amount of light this gave of was literally night turning in to day.

Been a while since I've entered but was disappointed to see the drop in activity on DPC lately. To have 70 entries for a "Best of" challenge was unexpected. It is however good to see some of the old names still shooting and participating. Glad the image was received well and you never can tell how an image like this will be received. Lightning being almost a signature from me on this site as it would appear that I was immediately identified by at least two voters.. Oops..) Thanks for the votes and comments.

Just looking at this image makes me very scared. I experienced a lightning this close once in the mountains in Australia and that was the last time I went hiking when thunderstorms were forecast!
Amazing that you caught it on camera and lived!

Congrats. It's official, they've changed the term Lightning Rod to Lightning Rian. Rod was a bit miffed. Hope your tent was holeless!

This is truly amazing! I am petrified of thunder and lightning so this would be my worst nightmare and the last thing on my mind would be to take a camera out. So hats off to you for your bravery. And more importantly congrats on the blue for this incredible image.
