The "Great Snow" of 2003 brought many opportunities to take some great photos. It was snowing so hard that the flakes would constantly wet the lens. If I used my flash, the snow looked like giant fireflies from the reflection of the light. I took this picture standing in my garage. I was able to keep dry and the flash was unnecessary. The lighting was just perfect from our outside lights.

I live in snow country(MinniSnowda) and can imagine waking up to that and having 15 minutes to get to work! What a wonderfully simple picture with a such a huge impact.

A Comment From The Critique Club

First Impression
Wow, a wonderful abstract :) I wonder what it is? How large / small is it?

(1) Composition / Content
I really like letting my eyes wander through this photo to explore the curves and texture. You can see all sorts of things in there if you just look long enough. One type of flowers comes to mind (can't remember their name) or an eye. It is definitely recognizable that I'm looking at a snow drift here once I've looked at the photo closer. I still am not sure what's sticking out of the snow. Since I don't know what that is, I have no real sense of scale, either.

(2) Background
Perfect black background that wonderfully complements the snow.

(3) Camera Work / Technical
Taking photos of snow is very hard and you did very well. The snow is just a bit overexposed on the top, but you have a good tonal range throughout your photo. The lighting and shadows add a lot and enhance some of the texture nicely.

(4) Post-processing
Converted to b&w just fine, no processing artifacts visible, which is good. There are a couple of stray white spots (for example towards the bottom on the left). Not sure what they are, but worth cloning out now that the challenge is over.

(5) Meeting the Challenge
This is where I got stuck with this. To me, this photo does not say despair. That might be partially because I like snow, but I think mostly I associated despair with a human reaction. That might just be me though. ... Duh, I just read through the comments. Of course it is a car. Once you see that you wonder how you didn't realize before, but I was too much taking in by the details :) I think this is what hurt your score a bit, I bet it would've done much better in an abstract challenge.

(6) My Opinion
Doesn't quite meet the challenge in my mind, even though I now know what it is, but gets closer. But the photo is a fantastic abstract. Wonderfully done!

Please let me know if you have any questions or comments about this review.

Took me a while to figure out what this was. Ouch! Better start shoveling now. Very well lit and framed.

Good simple composition with good lighting. The real espair would be if someone was in the car.

It took me along time to figure out what this is but I got it in the end. I thought it was a finger at first. You got a nice texture here and the black darkness at the top just fills this image with impact!

This is perfect! I think I've only voted on B&W photos for this challenge. great tonality. It forces you to really look at your image to determine what's going on.

It took me a while to realize that this was a car even though we are living in Virginia and experienced this same thing. This is a beautiful shot...I love the form and texture and light and negative space...very nice!

I feel a bit daft because it took me a long time to figure out what this was... However, as an image it's great. Technically good, something the viewer can relate to though I wish for a bit more emotion. I love the contrast and how it highights the curves. Good job..

This almost looks like a toy car. The snow drift looks disproportionately large for the car, so I am inclined to say that it is a toy car. Or is it a full size car?

Many snow images in this challenge. None as great as yours. Excellent composition, exposure, lighting. Great use of the negative black space. Fantastic detail in the snow. The car looks great too! (just kidding) 9/10

I have to admit it took me a few looks to figure out what I was looking at! That must have been quite a nasty storm!

I have no idea what this is supposed to portray. I just don't get it. If you explain, maybe the mark will go up.

Excellent lighting and lines. Took me a second to realize that under there is a car! This is so near perfect! I can even make out the ice crystals in the snow. Well done! Worthy of a win!
