I like the way you've set the game up in front of the board. it is more interesting than just shooting it "straight on." Maybe more light and a faster shutter speed to clear things up a bit?

Very pixellated, I think someone needs a new camera. I've never seen this much grain from a digital camera before, check your settings.

Horrible noise in this picture

This is too grainy, you need more light. Try using a flash (Or lots of room lights) and take the picture again and see what it looks like. Looking at the thumbnail(small size picture) , it doesn't look quite so bad, so make sure before you sumbit that you check it out at full size.

Interesting use of angles here.

Your camera seems to be letting you down with all the noise, Digital cameras are very sensitive to light conditions and less expensive digitals especially. You saved this photo at the 150k limit so I am assuming this is a problem with low lighting and too much gamma correction in the computer.

A good rule is that you can't really save bad lighting in photo editing by more than maybe a couple of steps before noise and other junk starts to mess with your photo. But good idea though.

Photography is all about light. Where is it coming from (what kind of shadows does it make)? Is it hard light, like on a sunny day, or soft light like a day with lots of clouds? I like the way you used a light from above to light up the pins in the battleship board. They've got highlights on the top edge and shadows on the bottom, and the clear blue plastic catches the light nicely, too. You might think about zooming in on that for another picture.
It looks like you used a high ISO setting for this picture (or the camera picked one for you). With most digital cameras, anything but the lowest ISO setting will not give you very good results. It's better to add more light instead of "turning up the volume" on the CCD by raising the ISO. That's what caused the colored speckles. To make this one better, you might try making it black and white. Then the colored noise will look more like the grain you see on fast black and white film.

Very grainy ... looks like the lighting is possibly very low, plus you are photographing something very dark. Try moving and getting more of the game in the pic too.

Try this with more light to get a better exposure. Nice topic and set up.

I was gave your photo a 1 because of such bad photo quality so I just wanted to leave you some comments of why I disliked it so much while trying to be constructive. I have more view of the back of the Battle Ship game then I do of the actual game itself. I like how you got low on it but I think moving more to the right and getting some of the bottom part of the game would have helped. I do like how you placed the game in front of the box with the very large Battleship text but the box seems to be what gives this picture the most excitement. The picture quality is absolutely horrendous for 150kb. It looks like you may have taken the picture with very little light and then tried to brighten up cause it looks so grainy.

Looks awful grainy.
05/23/2002 04:48:00 PM
Rough!

My favorite game, when I was much younger. I like your dramatic use of low camer angle effect to make the game board appear bigger than life. The box cover in the background to tell us about the game is a nice touch. Your use of a high ASA (oops! my age is showing) ISO speed to get the grainy effect of old time photographs is a nice touch.

Ouch! Was this a small file blown up (320x200 to up 640x480)? Looks VERY grainy. photo 3 Creativity 3 Games 3 total 3

Nice composition but the graininess really lets this down - looks like a high magnification enlargement.

I like the setup/composition on this shot, but the image is a bit grainy. Some more lighting would have made a difference here.

I really like this shot. I think more light on the game piece may have helped. I lke the way you brought it in close.

It looks like the exposure on this was way too long. Very noisy.

Well, I already know you've received comments about the grain. Since this seems to me like an advertising shot, I'd suggest trying to move the box a little higher over the game so we can see all of the name of the game. I like the way the hands on the box look like they're actually playing the real life game (especially the one on the left). Maybe you could try doing that a little bit more on the right too.

Your composition of the photograh is very good. I like the way that game board frames the name in the background. I think the only thing I can add to this is that maybe you could have used a little more light.

I like the angle but I think you should have included the side of the Battleship itself. I also agree with what digiteyes had said on the forum so stick with it. Go with what you like.

As I'm sure many people mentioned, the shot is a bit grainy. I would have liked to see more of the game board itself, it seems to me that this picture is more about the artwork on the box behind the game.

this is a bad photo! it is too grainy. i don't know if it is b/c of your camera quality or settings, but it should be improved.

I like your composition and subject. Since you asked in the forums, I agree with the others helping you that you should shoot with the highest quality and change it when you enter the contest. Also, long shutter speeds cause problems too, so when you can, use lighting so you can use a faster shutter. ISO settings above 200 will also cause your pics to be grainy. Good Luck and don't let the jerks bug you too much. Keep on entering.

looks like a picture from a pc monitor. Very grainy ( look at all the spots in the letters). Shoud be shot at the highest resolution possible.

Very nicely composed. This would make a good advertisement picture. Nice try!

Good job. It looks like you are playing this game in a real battleship, where it is dark and quiet. I feel like i am there.

this has to be the graniest pic I ever seen on dpchallenge
05/20/2002 01:34:00 PM
woa. Is this a picture of your monitor? I don't know the technical terms for this so I'll say it's too grainy, too dark, and too blurry for me. sorry.
05/20/2002 01:23:00 PM
horrible

I hated that game....the sounds would make ya nuts. :) Fun shot thanks for the memory, clever idea.

I suspect you wanted that grainy look, but I don't feel it works very well.

The ammount of noise on this shot is overwhelming. The shot itself is not really all there either.
05/20/2002 06:49:00 AM
this photo is really low quality. there's lots of noise.
05/20/2002 04:55:00 AM
I'm not impressed with the creativity of photographing a game box top. There is also a lot of graininess here... I'm not sure if that could have been prevented or not since it may be the camera used for the photo...

Woah!! grainy/artifacting
05/20/2002 12:47:00 AM
It's difficult to tell if the actual game is sitting infront of the box... I'll assume that it is. Looks like you needed more light to reduce the grain effect.
