I don't like the blanket blocking the baby's mouth and chin. I would also like to see the face more in focus. The blanket looks a little overexposed. Maybe a little bit less light behind the baby's head too. The window light seems a little distracting and the window seal looks like it is protruding from the baby's head. I would have come from up under the baby around the chin area and the hand would have been involved too. I have taken portraits of my niece and have learned what to do and what NOT to do. Just a bit of advice...from a person not even close to being pro..but going to college to get there. but my art work and other photos are on the following website.

This was one of my 10s. I absolutely loved the competition for my eye between the OOF face and the in-focus and. |

Well, I think I understand the problem people had with this photo. The hand being the focus of the photo instead of the face came about because of the situation. We have the most wonderful, delicate photo of our older son's hand, and were dying to get a similar photo of our younger son's hand.
He was finally resting quietly with his hand uncovered, so I grabbed the camera and started shooting. The first shots were solely of the hand, but I started to move around and get different angles. This was about the 5th or 6th shot of the session. The focus on the hand over the face was 100% intentional.
So while I "disagree" with the focus comments, I WILL take away from this challenge the need to examine the subject from a number of angles and viewpoints. I wish I had shot a few photos of the face in focus, or with a much wider DOF and everything in focus.
Thanks for the input! |

Sweet... but the hand looks really large, and i would have liked to see this little darling's face better. |

This is a special photo. I love it. |

This is one of those photos that totally counteracts all the thumbnail voting arguments. I hope people aren't seeing the thumbnail, letting the first half of this come up, and then voting. At first, I was thinking, "Wow, this is really out of focus." Then it finally finished loading and I thought, "Ah, I see..." The idea is very good -- I wish I could see more of the hand -- especially the fingernails. I also think a simpler background would have been a big benefit. |

I realy wanted to give this picture a high score but I realy wanted to see the face sharply. Congratulations are in order? |

It is a little bright on the left side, and the angle you have shot from is interesting, but it makes the hand look huge. It is a very "peaceful" picture. |

Like the choice of focusing on the hand rather than the face. Very different to the normal baby shots :) The bright blanket is distracting to me, and hurts an otherwise powerful image. I would have tried the same shot shifted to the right a little - rule of thirds wise the back of the hand would be in the 'ideal' position with the fingers leading the eye from the corner |

By your unusual choice of focus, it seems like the viewer's attention is supposed to be drawn to that hand. While it's an original idea, I'm not sure it's successful, since I'm still drawn much more to the face. I think it might be because the blanket is obscuring some of the baby's hand...it would have worked better with a more visible hand, I think. |

Nice, but the white blanket is a bit overly white. I like the focus on the hand, very special. Photo 9 Creativity 8 People 8 total 8 |

this would have been a better picture if you had set the focus on the childs face instead of his hand. |

I like how you focused on the hand instead of on the face. Those little fingers look impossibly small and so sweet! Nice photo! |

not sure if it's the resize or what but, while this is nicely composed, it's too out of focus for me |

the hand looks quite out of place in this shot, perhaps moving more to the left would have helped, as it looks almost deformed because of being 'cut off' by the blanket. |

Oh, what a precious photo this would be if only the face, instead of the hand was in focus! To do this, frame the face in the middle, press the shutter release button half way down to hold the focus, then move your camera to recompose the picture. |

Good detail in the hands; however it overpowers the soft focus on the face. |

This is a nice photo but I really feel that the baby's face needs to be in sharp focus rather than the hand... In this photo, it looks like the HAND is the subject of the shot... |

the crop and frame filling you chose is good. as is the use of bw. i wish there was more dof. or the focus was on the face. a bit blown on the white. which works here. |

The baby is darling. However the perspective makes it's hand look too large. It's a nice b&w, good work. |

I'm not sure I like the way the focus is on the hand here. I feel like I want to see the face and the ear more clearly. Especially the ear. |
