From the Critique Club
Tony, hello,
My first impression (when voting for the challenge) was, "Lucky person who gets to live in a place like this!"
This is a beautiful entry, and a good postcard. The frame, matting, and the lettering go well with the image. I like looking at this photo, but, to my eyes, there are a couple of details that bother me (just a little):
1 - The cropping, in particular on the left-hand side. The white of the sky meets the white of the matting (about the middle), and makes the mat look wider all of a sudden. Maybe cropping to the edge of the castle walls? Or, maybe making sure the sky is blue in this place?
2 - The perspective, it looks to me like either I or the picture is somehow leaning. I suppose a tall ladder wouldn't help much in this situation.
3 - The slight "halo" around the edge of the castle, most pronounced at the right of the picture - you possibly sharpened too much? The sky also looks a bit oversharpened.
But, as I said above, this is a beautiful entry. I am so glad you didn't divide the picture in halves (half sky / half earth) - the way you divided it works much, much better.
Keep up the good work! Take care,
Ursula I Abresch |

Nice point of view and lovely composition. Light seems a bit harsh, but this is certainly a place I want to go someday! Can I sleep on your floor if I bring my own sleeping bag?

I love it! We certainly don't have castles like that around here. I love the three layers ... foliage, castle and sky. Very good. Jacko. 10 |

NIce view but a little too contrasty. The sky looks a bit blown out. |

magnificent! I would have liked to creep up on the castle a bit more, but I recognize that the terrain might not have allowed you to get closer and still be able to see the castle on a high enough plane. |

Wow! I love the lush green of the foliage and the stately presence of the buildings. Nice job. |

Nice postcard shot, good composition and framing too. For some reason I get the feeling the whole image is leaning to the left, don't you? |

Great shot. I was there when a flag pole painter fell to his death. |

Beautiful focus, good exposure. Could benefit from polarizer (darken sky). Sun is in ideal position for maximum polarization effect.
I might have brought in just a bit less sky if adding more foreground would not result in intrusion of unwanted clutter.
All in all, beautiful. |

Should add ", Scotland" after "Edinburgh Castle". I like the font. |

You got it all in one shot! I love this. Again, one of those photos that allows me to say "I've been there!" I went to the UK and Ireland 2 summers ago, and Edinburgh was my absolute favorite. Thanks for the memories. |

Great subject to work with. Think this could be improved by shooting at a different time of day though. The sky is not very interesting and there is a lot of shadows.
Either that or you could have moved the castle higher in the sky to get rid of some of the blue. Would be great with a sunset/ sunrise though (fireworks being a bit hard to ask for with 1 weeks notice...) |
