i love shooting falls. i think by looking at this shot, you can figure out how you'd shoot it again, as this photo looks like a bit of a rough draft. too much bright sky, water hightlights blown out...i think the scene could be alot more intimate just by getting the bright sky outta there. nice little location though, it looks like.

Hello, and greetings from the Critique Club. The critique you are about to recieve is tailored for DPC challenges alone, and is not intended to be seen as an artistic critique per se.

Initial Thoughts

Whooops.. wrong challenge.

Composition / Content

While it's a fairly decent shot of a waterfall (That log really takes away though, for this particular composition), it's not a portrait in the eyes of DPC.. and that's the most important factor. Still, entering simply because you had to work so hard to get the photo takes some guts, so I salute that.

Background

Some blow outs in the sky, and a bit oversaturated in the brush.

Camera Work / Technical

Some overexposures and blown highlights, but focus is nice.

Digital Processing

*slightly* oversharpened to my eyes, and the saturation is still a little high in the yellows and greens.

Fits the Challenge

Not even close.. and I'm *trying* to give an out-of-the-box latitude here.. but .. hehe.. this isn't even in the same country.

My Opinion of the Photo

Like I said, a fairly decent photo of a waterfall marred by the log and the blown highlights, (and possibly too much space up top), but an absolute miss on the challenge. You know this however, and I salute your moxy for submitting it in the first place. Enjoy the brown ribbon :)

To me this doesn't belong in this category.
09/18/2005 09:15:04 PM
um.....would this qualify as a portrait?

You may disagree with me, and that's okay, but this doesn't meet the spirit of the challenge in my opinion.

Pretty falls, but portrait? Hmmmmmm

Hmmm....hmmm....
OK, well, though the color is bright, the highlights are quite blown-out, and overall it looks somewhat oversharpened, particularly in the upper part of the photo.

For portraits, though, I really prefer to see more of the subjects face, so perhaps a MUCH tighter crop on the face (wherever it is) would be a more powerful portrait presentation.

I think you should have moved the log so that it was leaning in the other direction.
09/16/2005 04:16:20 PM
did you mean to post this here?

I can't see how this picture relates to the challenge.

something is missing in this photo... But i guess you already got some comments what that is;) The colors are here though

I don't see a portrait????

Nice shot but not sure where the portrait is here ...

portrait? Very nice shot, beautiful setting, but not a portrait. A little bright on the water on the left, but an all around a good shot.

At first glance, it looked like the log is sitting on top of the wterfall at the left from the angle you shot the photo. Pretty scene though. Honestly, hard for me to score after seeing so many people portraits.....

IMHO a portrait should be of a live subject. This is a nice nature picture, but not a portrait.

I love it!. Great interpretation. I saw the thread but it works for this challenge too. Great lighting and coloring. Beautiful!

Nice take on the challenge, just think the log across the front is just too in your face kinda thing! Sounds silly, but I don't know how else to put it!! My eyes keep going to the log and not the beautiful falls behiind..

Should it be in another challenge?

This looks like something from High Contrast. I don't consider this a portrait.

this is the portrait challenge right?

Nice photo' but it is not what I think most people would call a portrait
  Photographer found comment helpful.
09/12/2005 11:11:47 PM
I dunno... it just doesn't fit the theme for me. I've seen portraits of animals and thought it was nice "outside the box thinking". But a waterfall...? It's a beautiful image, just not what I would call a portrait (which almost always is strictly of humans).

P.S.
Just so that I know that I'm not totally off base, I looked up the word portrait in Merriam Websters Online Dictionary and found this definition:

1 : PICTURE; especially : a pictorial representation (as a painting) of a person usually showing the face

As a scenic photo, it's okay .. quite a bit overexposed. Perhaps 'm not smart enough, but I don't see how this fis with the challenge.

A nice shot, but a bit of a stretch for a portrait challenge.

the branch across the frame is distracting

09/12/2005 05:17:15 PM
this is not a portrait.

Lovely shot, my only improvment might be a bit of burning at the top edge to keep the eye from wandering off the top of the page. Lovely color and tones. Of course it will probably get hammered since the subject is not a head and sholders shot with one hand supporting the chin, but it is a lovely photograph

09/12/2005 01:24:49 PM
doesn't say portrait to me.
Great picture.
Dosn't fit the challenge imho

This is simply classic. Freaking awesome shot, but....yeah, I know everybody else has already told you. It does meet the description at least, just not the title. Sorry to say, but I think you should expect a brown, but be proud of that. Classic, just classic
  Photographer found comment helpful.
09/12/2005 12:59:19 PM
I bet your are being hammered. At least you shot this in portrait orientation and it's in color. So I guess it's a 5.
  Photographer found comment helpful.
09/12/2005 10:18:25 AM
Grainy, you have over exposed and lost the detail in the water (that area that is solid white on the fall on the left)

09/12/2005 09:28:40 AM
Sorry, but this didn't fit the challenge for me.

09/12/2005 09:06:45 AM
Wrong challenge? "Branch" was due September 6th. A portrait of a log or waterfall will not fare well against the other entries.
  Photographer found comment helpful.
09/12/2005 02:19:52 AM
so this is a "portrait" of the falls?!? nice shot, I'll give you a 5 for that. If it had a human or at least animal being in it, I'd score it even higher.
  Photographer found comment helpful.
09/12/2005 01:58:37 AM
Beautiful falls and well done at that, but not a portrait IMHO.

I like the photo but cannot quite figure out where the portrait aspect is tho
