This is my first entry to dpchallenge.com. I'm happy with how this photo looks to my untrained eyes. I used a lot of lights at different angles to achieve the desired effect. No flash.

Beer Goggles.

My first shots were with an empty bottle, but that was slightly boring. In this shot, I used the bottle I was drinking! The beer inside and condensation on the outside of the bottle make for surface texture.

Harpoon IPA is brewed in Boston, MA. Very tasty!

06/24/2002 11:41:00 PM
Wow.. I'm impressed!! And now I wanna copy and see if I can do it/something simliar with my camera. Very inspiring and creative!

Thanks for all the comments... kept me entertained during the voting week.

This image was recommended for disqualification. Good thing I had the original with EXIF data available ;) Thanks to those that recommended it... I enjoy being kept on my toes.

Here's how it was done... the bottle is actually sitting on a glass table covered with an off-white colored cloth. Beneath the table are 3 low powered lights to evenly disperse the light. There is a cardboard cutout of a female figure taped to the bottom of the table beneath the cloth. The effect is that of a shadow puppet.

The image was shot from above, using a black leather jacket for the background. There are a few bright spotlights from above to help diffuse unwanted shadows and balance the light coming from beneath the table. There was a yellow-shaded spotlight from the back, which resulted in the bottle shadow in the foreground. The critics are still deciding whether or not it distracts from the photo... I did it on purpose to add a little extra confusion and give an effect of multiple lighting angles.

This was an extremely fun photo to set up. By far, its the most complex photo I've ever made in a staged setting. It took about 50 shots to get it right and I experimented with 3 completely different setups. The biggest challenge was making sure the lights beneath the table didn't blead through the white cloth causing a washout, which looked horrible.

I can't figure how you did this without editing....
06/23/2002 09:50:00 PM
nice!
06/23/2002 03:27:00 AM
Funny, but the foreshadow of the bottle hurts the effect. I am giving you additional points for creativity!
06/23/2002 01:11:00 AM
Now that's clever-very innovative-
06/22/2002 11:54:00 AM
HOW?! (6)
06/21/2002 07:44:00 PM
Nicely shot, I can't wait for the howto.
06/21/2002 04:12:00 PM
hhmmm ok...interesting. How'd you do that?
06/20/2002 06:48:00 PM
Very clever - I'd love to hear how you did this!
06/20/2002 12:23:00 PM
Funny. What's the black background? It's a little distracting with those folds. Still good shot.
06/20/2002 12:24:00 AM
The subject matter of this picture doesn't do a lot for me, honestly, BUT, I like the effect you have gotten. Makes you look twice.
06/19/2002 04:10:00 PM
Very clever. The lighting on the bottle is a little inconsistent with the 'shadow', and the lighting itself seems a bit strong. But all in all, very amuzing photo. And a good beer, to boot!
06/19/2002 04:04:00 PM
Great idea!
06/19/2002 03:43:00 PM
I like your idea here! this is a really neat execution.. very unique! I'm also glad to see another fan of the microbrews... I haven't had the Harpoon IPA, but I have enjoyed a few of the Harpoon Lagers... Is this shadow from a stencil held above the image??? great work! = 8 - jmsetzler
06/19/2002 12:07:00 AM
I had a similar idea but a different theme which I never had time to execute. I have my idea of how you did it but I can't wait to read about it from you. Extremely good job.
06/18/2002 10:44:00 PM
Fun shot, I really like the concept. The lighting seems a bit harsh, however.
06/18/2002 09:03:00 PM
This took some time to set up! I like the concept.
06/18/2002 07:53:00 PM
neat stuff here---10, all tho I like darker shadows
06/18/2002 07:16:00 PM
Cute!! I like the pointy butt. Should have more hair though.
06/18/2002 03:21:00 PM
Cool illusion. I couldn't figure out how to do it, but now I think I get it. Very clever!!!! Photo 10 Creativity 10 +++ Shadows 10 total 10
I thought I had seen the winner, but this is better!
06/18/2002 02:27:00 PM
Ha, cute. Funny how the reflection of the bottle is going the opposite direction of the "shadow" ; )
Nice composition
06/18/2002 01:42:00 PM
this isnt edited?
06/18/2002 01:21:00 PM
You are going to tell us how you did it, arn't you?
06/18/2002 09:38:00 AM
hmmm...how did you do that?
06/18/2002 09:34:00 AM
Very creative. Well done as to concept, idea and technical knowledge.
06/18/2002 12:50:00 AM
Is that a shadow or a cutout made to look like one? Either way it does a darn good job of making a statement.
06/18/2002 12:45:00 AM
too funny
06/18/2002 12:44:00 AM
Very nice, to bad it is not a picture of a guys shape. I would have given you a higher score.
06/17/2002 10:05:00 PM
My first thought was some Photoshop trickery going on......but if you did this by positioning lights and props it's very impressive. I will vote assuming no photoshop tricks....
06/17/2002 08:19:00 PM
I was trying to figure out how... Then I saw the "other" Shadow
06/17/2002 07:21:00 PM
trickery
06/17/2002 07:13:00 PM
Should have cropped out the bottle shadow as it comes into the foreground...it would have made your technique a tad more mysterious. Why's her butt pointy?? Definitely unique and refreshing.
06/17/2002 06:36:00 PM
Clever! :-)
06/17/2002 06:36:00 PM
Looks impossible without photo-editing. I would like to see this explained. Must be a shadow projection from above. Great job. A top score of 10 !
06/17/2002 06:35:00 PM
neat effect
06/17/2002 05:58:00 PM
If you did not tamper with this picture, then I really want to know how exactly you did that. Otherwise good pic.
06/17/2002 04:58:00 PM
clever shadow work - be interesting to see how you did this
06/17/2002 04:40:00 PM
Very clever looks like a good Inda Pale too.
06/17/2002 03:21:00 PM
disqualify
06/17/2002 02:37:00 PM
creative. you'll have to do a how-to on this one.
06/17/2002 02:35:00 PM
When you're recovered you'll probably be asked to write a "how they did that" article...
06/17/2002 02:18:00 PM
Hmm.. ok.. so if it isn't photoshop altered --- then well i see the bottle shaddow coming towards the viewer.. and then how did you get the other shaddow. Did you hold something up infront of a light so it would seem to be coming from the bottle? I was thinking of doing something like this but wasn't sure what to use/how to go about it. Seems interesting.
06/17/2002 01:27:00 PM
seamless
06/17/2002 01:16:00 PM
how'd you do that?
06/17/2002 12:17:00 PM
Very clever, Nice1."8". Dogman;-)
06/17/2002 11:53:00 AM
creative. i have an idea how you did it, but i'm probably wrong. you win points from me for creativity.
06/17/2002 11:49:00 AM
very creative
06/17/2002 07:48:00 AM
REALLY neat idea !
06/17/2002 07:23:00 AM
Very clever idea, well thought through
06/17/2002 03:25:00 AM
doctoring photos doesn't neccisarily show artistic skill. funny though
06/17/2002 01:25:00 AM
How did you do this?
06/17/2002 01:21:00 AM
Very clever idea. It took me a few minutes to figure how you did it. Nice lighting. DOF just right for the subject.
06/17/2002 12:36:00 AM
Great shot if it isn't photoshopped, my vote assumes that it's legit.
06/17/2002 12:16:00 AM
Wow that is freaking awsome! How the heck did you do that?
