Rita is a real good sport letting me make her up for some of these challenges. This time I put some facial mud on her face, hoping to disguise her, and wanting her to look as destitute as possible. Hope you like it. Also the hat has the insignia of Umbrella Corp from Resident Evil.

::: Critique Club :::

As requested, here is an indepth critique of your submission.

First Impression - the most important one:
I love this image. I found the subject very powerful and intriguing. I imagine it as an older mother that has been abandoned by her adult children. Works well for me.

Composition:
A tad off. You've used the Rule of thirs fairly well, but the image is slightly rotated CCW and I find it somewhat distracting.

Subject:
The subject, as stated in my first impression, is very strong. The baseball cap is a little unneccesary in my opinion, but not so much as to destroy the image.

Technical (Colour, focus, and light):
Focus is good as is the DoF you've chosen here. Maybe a little fill-flash in the would help the lighting, but it's not bad overall.

Colour ... I'm not real fond of the colour treatment here. It comes out a bit too green for my eye. A more natural sepia would have been a better choice for the color. B&W only may have been a lot stronger.

To grow its vote?:
More than likely, the lower votes were from the composition problem with rotation and the colour choice. Subject is obviously not the problem.

Summary:
You have a really good image here. A few technicals could have made it a very strong contender and perhaps even ribboned. Overall, this is a image in which you should take pride.

Hope to see more from you soon,
Leroy

You'll dislike this comment, but I don't think one can successfully simulate pathos. The quality of the photograph is very nice, though. Very good tonal range. 6.

This image makes me so sad. I just hate that there are people out there in situations like this. This certainly looks like it could be the real deal - the shoes do throw me off, but nevertheless, there ARE people like this, and this is a moving depiction.

Very sad image. You tell a story with this picture. Nice use of sepia tone in this image to further tell her story.

Im confused on this one. A bereaved mother? an older mother with no children at home? Image makes me uncomfortable which probably is your intent. Like I said, im confused but still bumping a bit. Pic on my monitor shows a little green, but probably a personal problem:)

The composition is sound and the subject matter is powerful. The white areas on her face make the image look a bit strange. Still a very evocative image.

Emotive. I'm bumping up to a 7 as I have no reason to give it only a 6.

A very emotional photo. Your processing matches the mood of the capture very well. I love old buildings that are falling apart. The stuffed animal is a nice touch. If this was staged, you did a great job. If not, I would love to know more about the story behind this picture. Wonderful job and good luck in the challenge.

I like this. Her shoes look too new for it to be that persuasive, but the image is thought provoking and I like the filter.
