Love both the original and the black and white, very magical shot.

I just want to thank everyone for all the nice comments and votes on my photo. This won the Merit award in the B&W Magazine's Single Image Contest Annual 2005. It was chosen as one of 200 images to be published out of over 5,000 images entered and 900 photographers. I was very honored even to get the Merit. And I am honored you all liked it enough to vote on it. The original colored version is in my portfolio if anyone would like to see it. Thanks again, it was fun.

I wish you'd used the whole 640 here because I suspect this shot would benefit from be able to view the extra detail. 800 would probably be nice. Nicely framed shot. I like how the path leads up out the back but we don't really know to where.

wow. beautiful composition. excelent light balanse.

Is this IR?
I like it how the dark arch of the old tree seems to shepherd the younger bright ones below. Old vs new, light vs dark. Great b&w. 8

I can't really see the detail here, its not the full 640pixels. It looks slightly tilted but is hard to see

Lovely shot, could have used some straighening and that let it down. Looking again it is the hill that is deceptive here and made me think it was not straight.

A little *too* contrasty for my tastes here.. it's a great vantage point, but I just don't like the presentation, personally.

Very, very cool. Nice job on the tonal range here. I would have liked to see a tad more brightness in the branches in the upper part of the image.

I am not normally a fan of B&W. (If God intended we shoot in B&W, He wouldn't have invented Kodachrome!) But in this case, the B&W was a superb choice. The framing of the scene with branches overhead and the dark foreground is magnificent. There is an interesting juxtaposition of emotion going on here ... the dark framing elements are ominous, but the lighter distant subject is peaceful, pastoral even. Makes for an interesting photo I would return to often, and look at longer. Focus and DOF are terrific. Museum quality. Among my top picks.

Very mystical, almost like a painting, I really like it but it´s just a tad to dark for my taste. Also, I think I would have liked this better if there was actually something underneath the tree as your title suggest, like a couple kissing or something like that but still one of the better shots in the challenge, got an 8 from me.

Nice photo. Great contrast. Good job.

Really nice B&W shot. Is it infrared? The framing from the tree and the excellent detail in the shot makes it really stand out amongst the crowd. Great photo.

very nicely done

IMO there is too much darkness above to give this photo punch. More sunlight breaking through the old oak tree would have improved this photo a lot. Beautifully photographed background.
