I had a bonanza this week photographing wildlife - ducks, geese, chickadees, nuthatches. But the cardinals stayed away until a day before the challenge (I'd actually been trying to get them for burst of color before that!) Lucky I was ready with the tripod set at the window and the long lens on the camera. Hope you like.

Too bad you couldn't captute the cardinal sitting on a branch rather than on a feeder stand. Focus is a little soft through the head/beak. Nice job with the light.

What a pity you couldn't get her crystal sharp because the underbody light is just lovely

8 - Very nice. Like the lighting. Very nice composition. Criticism; whilst I like the 'effect' of those wings in the main focus and the softness to the other areas of the cardinal, just a fraction sharper, or better, a 'wider' DOF/focal area (lens dependent/etc likely of course), more 'glint' in the eye, possibly also 640 height too and incorporating more 'context', for a little more balance within the composition, would have made this even better in my opinion, but difficult to 'get it all'. Otherwise 'as is' but trying to 'somehow' accentuate the effect of those slightly raised wings/etc, if that makes sense. Up to 8 from 7.

the onnly thing that could be better is the bird was in a pine tree

the head's a bit out of focus which is a shame because the use of colour is great. Shallow depth of field is good as long as the right part is in focus.

Very nice. I love the pose and the snowfall. Good light also. How did you get that light on his belly? One of my top picks.

Love the composition and color of this photograph. The DOF may be a tad shallow, seems to lose the great detail in the feathers as you get closer to the face.

i really like this a lot especially with "cold" background and hints of specular highlights ... kinda wish the bird's head had gotten some of the lighter exposure that appears on its underside.

wonderful picture. however, i cannot tell if the tail feathers are blurred from movement or if it is just their texture. nice work on the depth of field. very nice moment in time.

Lovely red against the snow. What a pretty bird. I like the detail of his feathers. It's interesting how the focus is on the body and not the head - I kind of like that. 8

Nice color, curved perch, and contrast against background. Focus on eye and more DOF would be better.

Another great bird shot. It's great that this finch is looking at you. First I wanted to say that it's too bad that it's head wasn't focused, yet I think it adds to the mystery: what does the bird think? Background colours contrast with the finch: wonderful. And I love the composition.

Looks like the focus was more on the back..wish there was a little more DOF.

Handsome cardinal, a wee bit soft. Nicely composed, good subject, and cooperative to pose so nicely!

only thing I can see that may of helped with this very nice photo is more light from behind to help bring out details in tail, otherwise very nice photo

I love these birds and you did a great job on this shot. Usually, I like the sharpness focused in on the eyes/face, but with this, the sharpness on the end of wing gives a 3-D effect. the blend of red and black against the grey BG is equally appealing! Good luck, definitely one of my faves!

Nice one! Like the curve that perch provides (is it a fence/ gate?) and the off-centred composition works well. Good detail in the back feathers but the DOF is too shallow for my tastes here as the tailfeathers and face aren't quite as sharp as the back. Backdrop contrasts well with foreground, which is good.
