Rainbow colors of brainwashness are obviously bringing patriotic vote ...what about if we only and just enjoy colors and photography without transmitting any nonsense messages ? |

Echoing the many platitudes. A seriously excellent photo, and another very well-deserved win. And not only is it one of the highest scoring photos, it's probably the greatest margin of victory yet... not that those things matter. ;?) |

John, congrats on the well-deserved win. Looking forward to that pizza (see below). |

07/08/2002 06:58:00 AM |
Hi, I'd like to explain my reasoning for giving this a low mark (I gave a 3, which I admit is a bit low). 1. Its not that original. A very similar shot of water on a leaf won a couple of weeks ago. One comment suggests that this technique was shown practical photography very recently. 2. Its not that technically difficult. You have complete control of the subject. Its a bit like painting by numbers, gives good results for a mimimum of effort. 3. It panders to patriotism, without actually saying anything about it. If the flag was in a patriotic context (parade, cemetary, etc) then thats OK, but I would really have prefered to be able to judge this without having to consider whether the use of the flag was cynical or not (BTW, I am British). |

Great job John! What a wonderful shot! I missed voting this week I would have scored this image high. How could seven people score this a 1....I don't get it..... A job well done! |

Congratulations, John! Way to go! Outstanding!!! |

07/08/2002 12:27:00 AM |
great job john (alka), and great high score!. So much for that hole "scores are getting lower" thread. One of my few favorites that did well. Seven 1's is just wrong. Great job man, I am seriously jealous, or is it envious? Envious. |

I would like to thank everyone for the great comments on this photo. I’m not going to go into details about it here because I have prepared a “How’d They Do That†for the site. The only brief comments that I wish to make are: 1) I wish I had known about the Popular Photography photo before I did this. I would have used my other idea instead, which is shown in my “How’d They Do That†article. 2) The Popular Photography photo was NOT my inspiration for this shot. The photos that inspired this shot are listed in my article as well. My objective was to produce a BETTER image than the ones I listed. 3) I don’t believe that duplicating ideas that others have already done is wrong in any way. If this was the case, every photographer who photographs the Eiffel Tower or the White House would have to give credit to the first person who did it, right? J
I spend too much time looking at photography online. Because of this, I see quite a few photos that are duplicated ideas. I don̢۪t hold that against the photographer. Cheers to all, and I hope everyone who celebrated Independence Day in the US had a safe and happy weekend J

Yes, we all know you're gonna win -- nicely done, John :) My only complaint is that the lighting seems uneven. That is, the white of the background flag at the bottom left seems darker than that at the top right. Could be my eyes.. |
07/07/2002 10:38:00 AM |
Depth of field works well with this shot. Overall size of water drops provides even distribution of the flag in its multiple versions across the frame. Very colorfull and well done. |
07/07/2002 09:14:00 AM |
Wooooooow! Wish I'd had THIS idea. Oh wait, I did! :) (flowerdrops) This is a spectacular capture! Clear, crisp and just wonderful colors. Can't wait to swap stories about how you did it. |
07/06/2002 06:47:00 PM |
I love the illusion of depth you get with this technique. I'm not a huge fan of using the flag motif, but it works well here. Isaac just walked by and said "cool, American footballs!" |

I would like to know how this was accomplished. Would it be out of line for the photographer to e-mail me? macaron002@aol.com |

This is a beautiful shot, the drops are cristal sharp. the colors are striking (duh!), and you have a patriotic theme for the 'Transparency' challenge a ten in my book. |

This is easily one of the best images I've ever seen on this site. |

I really love this picture - so patriotic!! |
07/04/2002 12:57:00 AM |
fantastic interplay going on in this image. The sharp/soft, large/small (and even smaller!), upside/downside, straight/curved... I could go on. |

I rated this one higher just to counter the anti US vote you will get here. |

07/03/2002 12:44:00 PM |
Awesome shot!!!! I have seen this done before with the flag and its always a pleasing effect. |
07/03/2002 10:31:00 AM |
This is, without a doubt, the best photo of this week's challenge. It's the only 10 I'm giving because no other photo comes close (and I usually give several 10s). Fabulous job! |
07/03/2002 09:07:00 AM |
I've seen a few versions of this and even wanted to try it myself for this challenge, but I forgot. Well, I'm glad I forgot because yours turned out totally awesome, you would have kicked my butt!! ;) Nice job! A 10 for the red white and blue! :) |

07/02/2002 08:04:00 PM |
OK, I must admit that while simply waving a flag in front of me does little for a vote, this shot is so freakishly well done that I find myself just staring at it. Excellent, excellent photo. Fantastic, awesome, 10! |
07/02/2002 08:01:00 PM |
You got recognized in the forums. Nice work. I really like how this turned out. No ifs/ands/buts about it. NO patriotic influence. This would have been great with many different subjects. Great color! Photo 9 Transparency 9 total 9 swash |

I have no idea how this was done, but I will assume that it meets the criteria for the rules - I think it is an interesting shot = 6 |

07/02/2002 03:16:00 PM |
creative 10 interesting 10 focus 9 framing 10 = 10 I like the way I can see all the flags in the drops. If you look at it long enough it looks like they are floating. I love it. |

They look like little blimps. I happen to know whose this is, and you always have the best water drops, and I'm wondering how you do it, cause mine never come out that way :-) I wonder what it would have looked like with the flag in the plane of focus, so it would almost look like the water drops were on the flag itself...I don't know if that would really work in reality though. Nice job, as usual! - Kimberly |

This is a very well done shot. nice color selection- clear- Congrats, My top choice for this challenge - total 10 - good work semi-transparent 10 - Over-all appeal -10 distortion 10 Artistic - 10 colors in objects 10 Be creative 9 One minor tid bit...In many countries it could be disrespectful to display an inverted flag.... How much effect is lost if the photo is turned 90 degrees??

This is awesome! A winner! (10) |
07/01/2002 05:12:00 PM |
I love this, but I think the whites have too much of a blue/cyan tint to them -- as if this was taken on an overcast day. There's an easy way to tweak this (legally, I think) in PS -- but I don't know if you have that program. If you're not sure what I mean, let me know and I can tweak a copy for you for comparison. |
07/01/2002 04:28:00 PM |
I love this! Great idea...awesome focus/clarity. I might try this for my son's room. Top 3 for sure! 10 |
07/01/2002 03:56:00 PM |
john, i knew you had a winner here as soon as i saw this on deviantart (before the challenge). awesome shot. i'm usually a little wary of flags (being german and all that), but this one is really well done (you can see what it is, but at the same time it appears very abstract). i like the vertical angle for the flag, and how the little water droplets make it look as if they are far away, this shot has a lot of perspective to it. how far away was the flag from the glass? you are definitely in my top 3 this week. -- gr8photos (10) |

07/01/2002 03:34:00 PM |
I love this shot. I wanted to do something similar, but you have far surpassed anything I was looking at. Excellent job. Great depth. At he end of the week, I am still looking at it and loving it. Way to go! karmat |

07/01/2002 03:23:00 PM |
Umm this looks like a photo I saw in a magazine recently. |
07/01/2002 03:09:00 PM |
On the thumbnail I like it this way, but on the big image I think I'd like the flag to be right side up in the drops. Whatever, I'm nitpicking, it's awesome! |
07/01/2002 01:47:00 PM |
Really great work. I like all of it - dof, contrast, composition/layout. Only one thing though, could the white have been better? I've had this problem in the past - white coming out more grey. If this was intentional, then my apologies - personally would've liked it just a little brighter. I'm new at this, and don't want to be out of line - I've found that the white balance changed my photos . But I really like this, creative, artistic - just a really great picture. Ruthann |
