 This is actually my husband. He normally wears a Mohawk so I clippered the top and shaved the sides with a razor so I could paint the skin.

During the painting, which took over an hour, he actually fell asleep and started snoring....gotta love it!!

The lighting was simply a low strength light to the side with an umbrella. He was worried his tongue would not be long enough for the Gene Simmons style but I think it was quite suitable...LOL!!

Post Processing was the following -

- Levels.
- Dodge on the eyes and teeth.
- Touched up a couple of light areas.
- Neatened up a couple of the paint edges.
- Reduced yellow and blue hues.
- A small amount of burn on some of the shadows.
- Crop.
- Resize.
- USM.


Post challenge -

Okay there has been a lot of debate on whether Kiss was masked or unmasked during the 80's. So here is my viewpoint.

I chose the Gene Simmons look because of the fanfare of that group. I live in Australia and we are behind the USA in music therefore during 'MY' 80's they were painted...not for all of the 80's though. I also did some research and based my knowledge on this link....

So some of you were wrong in your information that you found....but that is okay.

For the ones that felt the paint was from the 70's...that is okay. You see.....Kiss was still playing in the 80's and later. But they were known for their paintwork. So if I had photographed someone sticking their tongue out without any makeup can you imagine the comments I would've received. Half of you would not have known what the heck I was on about. So with the makeup it was obvious that I was referring to the band 'KISS'. So I used their trademark....regardless of whether they were painted in the 80's or not....it showed who they were by their trademark.

But anyways...thankyou to everyone for your continued support and wonderful comments...oh and of course the votes.

Now everyone, get out there and take some photos....just don't use too much makeup....lol!!

Oh wow! Very nice. I love the way the "v" in the makeup on his forehead, his chin, and his tongue all point in the same downward direction. And also that the red below the eyes the red tongue. Well done.

Yes, Kiss in the US was still in makeup in the early 80's, I was and still am a Kiss fan...GREAT SHOT!!!!

Sure, Kiss maybe wasn't the dominating powerhouse that they were in the 70's, but they were definitely alive and well and putting stuff out in the 80's! They have some of the most rock solid fans there are (try telling any Kiss Army member they weren't an 80's band!) And as TC points out, they were still in makeup til 83, and had some hits in the 80's. The photo is just great though. It reminds me of when the guys all put out a solo album. Maybe a square crop would make it feel like an album cover :-)

I hate drawing a shot to critique that has won a ribbon. What can I say that the voters haven't said already? I could go even more in depth into the history of the band, but that isn't really the purpose of a critique now is it?

This shot is simply stunning! Great choice of going with the centered subject! Doesn't always work, but this time it's perfect. Awesome lighting. Love the shadow on the right side of the subject's face (Left in photo). Focus is spot on. Everything is nice and sharp, but not to the point of hurting your eyes. Only thing I can think of to improve the image would be to have a light near the camera to put a little sparkle in his eyes. Not sure that would really help in this instance though because after all Gene was supposed to be the 'King of the Night Time World' and you captured that essence!

Keep up the good work. Let's see more ribbons.

Kiss actually remained in makeup until 1983 (Unmasked was kind of a spoof) making this a plausible image for the eighties challenge. I still think of them being a 70's band also. However IMHO it still meets the challenge and is an awesome shot! Congrats on the blue!

I could say that perhaps the tongue could do with being a little more pointed, but that would be nit-picking. It's a great shot, made so strong by the wonderful use of lighting.

Back in November I selected Judi as one my favs photographers because folks there is talent here and I sensed it back then. Recently this artist has delivered two top notch winners which have captured the fancy of the DPC voting blocks. Quite an accomplishment and so are these last two images!

Hehehehe...Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi, Oi, Oi...is an Aussie saying...sort of like a chant used at different events, especially sporting events, when we either do well or are trying to encourage a fellow Aussie. Mainly we use it to show when we are proud. I hope that makes sense. In any case....Aussies are seen to be a little nuts....but we are fun loving...hehehe!!

Congratulations on the ribbon. It's funny, but to me KISS is very much a band of the 70's, but I sort of ignored most music from the 80's. I actually thought they went unmasked only recently...
You may not know, but the Canon Rebel is called Canon KISS here in Japan. For advertising purposes, they use a quartet of non-Japanese children made-up as the KISS members and they sing "I was made for loving you, baby". Quite cute, in a way.

WTG on your Ribbon!!

according to Kiss's own web site they were very active in the 80s, and started out with the makeup in that decade, Unmasked was out in May of 1980.. so they did start the decade out with make-up... on their web site they have photos of themselves with makeup on as late as June of 1980. SO,, there are some DPCers here that were incorrect.. :) Judi was right!!

Very nice shot and I'll give you credit for meeting the challenge but it's a bit tenous as the 80's in Kiss history is know as the decade that the boys took off their makeup. I'll let it fit into the challenge simply because they actually didn't take the makeup off in public until 1983. They never again appeared in makeup until their 1998 reunion tour...

It's a great photo but I think of this era of Kiss as the 70's. My recollection of 80's Kiss is when they took off the make-up. Cool photo, though.

Here is an excerpt from a website. I was a bit confused by this image because I remember KISS from the 70's and not the 80's. Seems I was correct. I researched the era and found this: ""Kiss" returns. Yes, the rock group that thrilled fans and terrified their parents in the '70s has reunited for a summer tour beginning June 28 in Detroit. The 40-something rockers haven't played together since 1979." Therefore, this image is really a DNMC. KISS albums and such may have been listened to and prevelant in the 80's, but the band itself was already diminished in the 70's and from the 70's. You missed it by one year. I still like the image though, and will give it a 5 for technicals and effort.
