Challenge: Something Old II (Advanced Editing IV*)
Camera: Canon EOS-20D
Lens: Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM
Location: White Sands, New Mexico
Date: Apr 12, 2006
Aperture: f/20
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/6
Galleries: Landscape
Date Uploaded: Apr 18, 2006

A yucca plant in White Sands, New Mexico. I shot others with a bloom on top of the yucca, but I liked this photo better overall.

Cloned out a bunch of dust specs (glad it's advanced editing) and some minor distractions in sand. Tweaked levels a bit and saturation. Selective color - white: pulled back on the yellow channel. Cropped, resized, a tad of usm, border, save for web.

Thanks for all the votes, comments and favorites! I liked this shot, and couldn't pass it up for the challenge, even though like some say it is a bit of a stretch for "old." Sand is pretty old though. Thanks again!

Ohmy! This is beautiful! Surreal and so incredibly striking. I remember being White Sands. What a gorgeous capture of it!

Outstanding shot at the best time to shoot the sand in WSNM. I'm envious. This is the type of shot that I hoped to achieve when I was there but was never able to pull it off. Bravo for seeing and capturing this wonderful scene!

Beautiful shot. Great colors and lines and a good neverending fell. I gave you a 7 on this one.

Very nicely done. The wind-blown sand leads the viewer's eye through the entire shot, sopping by each important element. The lighting is beautiful, wspecially with the highlight that separates the sand background from the sky. I'd really like to see the rest of the plant's shadow. While you have followed the rule fo thirds to a T, chopping off the shadow leaves me hanging just a little bit. Overall, and 8 in my little world of voting.

I loved this shot. The wrinkles in the sand tell its been there for a while. Maybe it was pushing the challenge, but it kept me looking!

Absolutely beautiful. New favourite, this is an exceptional image that I hope will do well even. Top 10 at least.

Looks right out of a Sci-fi movie. Amazing subject and texture. I like how the bluish tones carry through the photo without being a bluish cast(does that make sense?). Well done!

10!!

I am a greenhorn. My opinion barely must be taken into account. I even invented my own voting system which everybody is free to criticize-I don't have a better one.

10- exceptional good. Real art.
9- better than commercial print. Between art and comercial print
8- could be a good commercial print
7- fair commercial print
6- ordinary snapshot, good technic
5- ordinary snapshot
4- ordinary snapshot, poor technic
3- no subject but good technic (colors, focus)
2- no subject, fair technic
1- no subject, no technic, no meaning

Startling. The light is absolutely brilliant ... I love the effect of the near absence of the middle ground; at first glance it makes the background dune hover in the sky. Bump: 8.

The picture is really lovely, but I think this is really a stretch for fitting the theme. "Old" isn't what comes to mind when I look at this. I would have given it an 8 or 9 if it really nailed the theme.

Beautiful composition. Perhaps relies a bit heavily on the title to fit within the contest subject, but artistically the image has real merit.
