Challenge: Motion Blur II (Advanced Editing IV*)
Camera: Panasonic DMC-FZ20
Location: River Thames Reading Berkshire UK
Date: Jun 21, 2006
Aperture: f/8
ISO: 80
Shutter: 1 s
Galleries: Abstract, Nature
Date Uploaded: Jun 25, 2006

Taken in the nature reserve by the Thames to the east of Reading. It is my attempt to capture the feel of an impressionist painting by using a longish exposure to add a sense of movement to the image. To get the long exposure I was using three ND filters and a polarizer: interesting experience :-)

Note that there was no cropping or cloning on this picture: I liked it as it was framed, which is a first for me.

Post Processing:
- levels
- shadows and highlights
- separation of the foreground grass and the reeds into seperate layers
- on each layer:
+ hue and saturation adjustments
+ minor curve adjustment
- flatten image
- slight levels adjustment
- resize image
- resize canvas times three to add border
- noise ninja
- save for web

No sharpening as I wanted to preserve the softness of the image, although this could count against me when folk review :-)

Hello from the critique club.

Hi Carl,
This is a very nicely observed photo. You have definately achieved what you set out to. You had a good selction of feedback on this picture and a lot of people appreciated the impressionist/painterly feel. Great work.

It is a shame that these type of pictures do not tend to score as well as they should, perhaps because voters spend so little time on each image. Your photo is subtle and as such perhaps does not have that attention grabbing quality that would lead to a 6+ score.

Personally I very much like it, although it somehow manages to give an impression of being cramped which feels odd in a landscape. Perhaps this is the tight crop.

I wonder also if it could be improved by the inclusion of a static object, such as a gate, rock, tree or person to 'anchor' the picture.

Overall an excellent take on the challenge (IMO) I would like to try something similar myself so in that way inspirational also. Great work.

Regards

Chris

Interesting abstract here, but the grass in the foregound looks really pink and is clashing with the yellow tones elsewhere in the photo.

Like the feel of this one, indeed impressionistic!

The wind blur creates some interesting elements in this shot. but it doesn't quite "come together" for me, somehow.

Very nice movement. Definitely "impressionism." I wish you could have caught the movement that is on the right evenly across the entire pic - but then I imagine the wind had all the control here.

This may not do well with the voters, but I like it.

This is kinda cool. ;^) There's enough in focus to know what everything is, yet with the title, you can tell that it's windy. With having 3 principle sections separated by color, it has an abstract feel to it.

Good luck!

This has an almost impressionistic feel to it. I also like how you cropped this, which enhances the the different elements present. What I might suggest is boosting the contrast just a bit. A slight s-curve in photoshop should do the trick.

This would so suit an "Impressionism" challenge, but it also suits "Motion Blur" as well.....
