 Found in the Eastern United States. The spines on the side of the caterpillar are mildly poisonsonous and if touched will sting.

Thanks for all the great comments. This was a last minute entry. I found this little guy in my garden. I was actually stung by him when I was cleaning out some dead corn plants. At first I thought I had been stung by a yellow jacket. It was quite painful for a few hours. I decided that the least he could do after stinging me was to be a subject for a picture. I used tweezers to pick him up and place him on my hammock and let him crawl around while I took several shots. When I was finished I put him on a leaf in the woods to allow him to finish his life cycle! I know the subject was "Rope" for this challenge, but I thought he was so interesting looking that I had to find a way to get him in a challenge! I never expected 4th place. Thanks again.

WOW.wow i looked at it and i thought you had made somthing out of chocolate, but wow... i have never seen a caterpiller like that! but great job with the focus!

geesh! As a girly girl I would have most likely ran away screaming if I ever found such an ugly thing in my garden! :) And you are making me rethink that perhaps I could try resisting such reaction.....
Thanks for submitting. I've never seen Saddleback Caterpillar Moth. It actually looks like a one of those figurine toys for boys. You may want to submit this picture as "Stock Photography." Could make a few dollars off of it. Somebody out there might be looking for a really good photo of a Saddleback Caterpillar Moth. Which this one is! Congrats on its placement in this contest!

I like the depth of field here - nicely out of focus background and the spikes on the caterpillar are sharp. And of course the rope is a prominent part of the picture.

Weird creature! Kind of disgusting and cute at the same time. Nice photo, especially like the shallow depth of field. The lighting is a little flat.

Back to comment - what a cool caterpillar!! I have never seen such a critter - amazing! Great shot and composition. I voted 8 - would have been 9 but I feel the shot is more about the critter than the rope (although I can't blame you)!

Nice shot, the caterpillar moth is nice and sharp and very colorful. Composition is good and uses the theme of the rope well.

This is a lovely image of a caterpillar. Well done. One small problem is the challenge theme is 'Rope', the rope in this shot is secondary and not the subject. ;^) Best of luck to you in the challenge.

Although the bug appears to be the main subject the rope is dominant throughout the pic and frames it well. I think I'll fave it. (and bump to a 10)

The rope is forgotten with a face like that! That is one weird looking critter! I, however, felt the subject was not the rope.

one of the strangest things I've ever seen, looks like a bizarre toffee. unfortunately it makes no difference if there's a rope in the image, so DNMC IMO
