The sun was reflecting off the bottem of a storm cloud as it came up and created and almost errie lite on the peaks of Maroon Bells. I done a poor job captureing it, i think my exposure must have been wrong. Its ony my second challenge so i am posting it anyway. It was awesome to see. hope some enjoy it.

i processed in raw
used spot healing to try and remove a few water drops on lense as it was misting when i took it.
created layers for Levels, color/hue, contrast/brightness
then created layer of just the mountain and tried to add color and levels to make up for poor exposure of mountain peaks.

Hi David,
I've noticed this photo before when browsing through portfolios, and was very surprised it hadn't scored higher. The light and green tones on the trees are stunning.

I gave this a 7. It looks like a postcard! Lovely and painterly.

Greetings from the Critique Club

I can definitely see where this would be difficult to shoot correctly. If this was shot in RAW I would suggest trying a program like Photomatix (there's a free trial download online), which allows you to produce HDR (high dynamic range)/exposure blending of a single or multiple raw files. It would definitely help with a shot like this.

The color is a bit odd to me. I assume you were trying to recreate what you saw but I don't think it translates well here. The image could be sharper and have more local contrast but otherwise isn't bad. The composition is ok but it compacts what is probably a more grandiose scene. However, without knowing what the rest of the area looks like the cropping may have been necessary but I bring it up only to illustrate a need for that in a challenge like this. Landscape shots tend to do very well when they have a sense of the infinite about them and the way to convey that is with the composition showing as much as you can possible. Using rule of thirds also helps to position that space to give the image that infinite feel.

That's pretty much it. I like the fact that this is unique and had you captured it better you would have been looking at a much higher score so just consider this a good hack at a fastball to steal a baseball term. Good luck in the future!

The composition is good, but some of the details have been lost through post-processing.

bottom half of the valley needs more contrast - looks like too much shadow/highlight filter - a masked contrast layer would clean that right up and give you 2 more points in my book. 6

You were going for a neat effect, but IMO, the top became too harsh/distracting.

Bit too much highlight in my opinion.

This is an absolutely beautiful scene. It is very well composed. I think you could improve this shot a lot by lightening the shadows and applying more sharpening.

Certainly a golden glow there. Some of the contrasts are a bit harsh.

This is a really interesting colour effect, I think lightening the shadows on the forground to pull the trees into the photo might have been a couple of extra points.

Quite good lighting in this one, but appears to dark in the bottom.....
