 Ok, just in case you were wondering what they're doing, they're firing a homemade water rocket.

The string is connected to a device made of a piece of plywood and a metal latch. There is a 2 liter coke bottle half filled with water that is fixed upside down to the latch. An air compressor is connected to the bottle.

Pulling the string releases the bottle, and it flies several hundred feets up the air due to the pressure.
