Very clever shot. Too clever, in fact. I admire the thought that went into this shot and I offer the following observations. 1) many people won't recognise this as a kerosene stove. 2) there's no way the viewer could know that this kerosene stove was being used to roast peanuts. 3) You can't quite make out the word "Live" in "Live with it". I still love the texture of the shot - I just wish I'd been able to get the rest of your idea out of it too.

Thanks for your coments! I understand that none could get what I was trying to comunicate here. So I explain....
The image is of a Kerosene stove, and the tank of the old kerosine stove is shown in the image with the lid that is used to open and add kerosene. Since this is the most characteristic part of a stove, I took a close up and assumed that all those who have seen a kerosene stove would be able to relate to it.
This image is shot on a street-vendor's cart in Bangalore (India) who sells roasted peanuts on the roadside. He uses old magazine paper/newspaper to make paper cones for packing the peanuts. So behind what you see as black is the image is the stack of magazines that he is going to use over the day.
The black paper is interesting and I delibrately included it in frame because of what is written on it in the red. It says " Live with it". Hence the title bare necessities.
The reason I entered this image in this challenge is that this is a product which is really old, but is still being used in its original form for earning a living. My interpretation of the challenge was that to shoot something that is really old, looks old but has some significance in the present context.

Mostly a good shot, but of what? I honestly don't know what this is. What is the paper behind the rusty thingy? Metal bar on the left should be cropped, it is out of focus and doesn't add anything that I can see to the shot. 6 Swash

What is that black white and orange thing in the background? Great old pipe to focus on but not well cropped/ isolated.

The subject is great. I am unfortunately distracted by the modern pamphlet. Don't be afrait to modify your scene within reason to make your point. The pamphlet could have been put back later :) Definitely one I would have shot.

I don't get the title connection to the photo. The picture does not work as a whole for me. I would have like to have seen more of a closeup on the old, corroded surface of the object in the foreground. lhall

Good focus and capture of the details. Since I don't know what I'm looking at, I don't know what the black paper (?) is for, but that's okay. it's still a pretty good shot. karmat

The black thing distracts from what I'm assuming is the focus of the photo (the rusty bit).

It's a lovely sharp, colourful, high contrast shot but what is it of? Not that it matters much - you've captured the oldness nicely and contrasted it with the newness of the other unidentifiable thing. :)

Whatever it is, it sure looks old and fits the challenge. The background thingy is distracting though. You may not have had any control over that, but it still interferes with the image.

Nice detail, but I hate to admit I have no idea what it is...

? I don't understand the black thing in the middle of the picture.

hmmm...critiquing this soley based on technical detail as i am incapable of comprehending this. Great detail and dof. Nice contrast. Looks old. 7 Lisa

This is a neat photo with the exception of the paper or whatever it is behind the subject... If it serves some purpose in the photo, please elighten me on what that purpose may be... - jmsetzler
