I sure hope everyone who votes on this photo takes the time to let the page load fully. From the thumbnail I was thinking "1", then afer looking at the expanded view I discovered why it is so dark. This is a very good "available light" photo. It is quite clear and it is easy to distinguish what the separate opbjects are. The darkness of the photo almost lends it an almost sinister feel rather than and older feel. Still I think this is very good. I know how difficult it is to get a good clear shot with no lights. =7 syamjonimi

A little too dark

I know this is supposed to be dark, but how about burning the candle down half way. The glasses are "out of place/time". Your setting seems to be turn of the century (1900, not 2000), but the glasses are very current. Plus the reflection on the lens probably isn't a good thing. 6 Swash

Good compositional idea. A bit underexposed. Out-of-period glasses.

Lovely idea but waaay too dark. A gentle light from a bulb is really needed to be able to see the glasses and book properly without over exposing the flame. Very very difficult shot to get right - well done for attempting it.

what's old? the time when people actually read by candlelight? for a composed scene, pretty good. the reflection in the glasses redeems the darkness somewhat, and actually it is quite realistic

I like the photo, and the composition, but it is just a little too dark for me (or on my monitor). lhall

I really like the concept of the candle in this photo.. the book is obviously old... I wonder if a little extra lighting on the book would work well here? good shot :) - jmsetzler

Very nicely done. Maybe a touch too close on the left, but that is minor. karmat

Just a teeny bit too dark -- would have been great otherwise.

I knew I left my glasses somewhere. 9

Nice composition, however a little dark (tough to shoot a candle light isn't it?). More light could have highlighted the age of the book. (5).

the glasses don't look very old ;oP Really though, nice job

This is one of my top photos of the week. I love the mood that it evokes. The subtle blue in the tablecloth really accentuates the old yellow color of the book. I'm sure you are hearing that it is too dark but I think if it was any lighter it would spoil the mood. Great Job!

too dark, this had alot of potential

Love it - another 10 - it's magical, it captures the moment, it tells a story, it's technically unfaultable - bet somebody has a dig though :-) - well done - this has to be one of the best pictures I've seen (and there are quite a few quality pictures in the challenge). Totally professional in my book...

would have been better if you could place some light on the pages. book and glasses lost in darkness

its too bad u couldnt find old fashioned glasses to go with this...i like the idea though...

nicely done.

I think if you had let the candle burn down to about half way or more the pix would have been more interesting---and the light would have been closed to the book and glasses adding more soft illumination to them.

Another of my shots was that of a Bible whose page-edges had yellowed with time. I'm glad I didn't submit it now.
