I find the diversity of opinions very interesting... If I count how many people like the lighting (counting me in) and how many think it's too dark it's 9 to 9. I'm not sure what to do now ;-)

After reading floyds comment I also see that the photo would have looked better when the light was more evenly distributed. The direction of the light was not under my control as the statue is in a museum and I think they wouldn't be very happy if I would have started to adjust the lamps ;-)

Personally I liked the photo for the strong shadows and to me it looked almost like the statue "beholds" me. That was also the reason why I cropped it that way. To me the statue looks down at me and somehow I liked this effect.

Anyway, many thanks for your comments. As always, most welcome :-)

I like the way the colors "fit" the subject

Very nice. I like the positioning of the statue, a position in the middle would have been as perfect. The lighting is also great, the shadows are really nice.

the assignment was taken very literally...

Great job! I love the lighting and the cropping. Having the face off-centered and showing a portion of the upper body leads the eye upward to the top right of the picture. - 10

Shadows too dark and top half of photo overall too dark. Ignoring that I like the content.

possibly the oldest item photographed for this challenge. nice composition, too. the shadows are too black for my liking though. i would love to see at least a little detail there. i played around with the photo a little, and found that by increasing contrast, brightness and gamma this photo got a little more 'umph' which i think improved it. let me know if you would like a copy of what i did for comparison and to see whether you would like it. -- gr8photos (6)

I think this picture needs more light to truly emphasize the features. I like the general composition. karmat

Lovely lighting showing the depth of this picture. It's a bit of a shame that the majority of the light isn't on the face though. Still a great shot.

Congratulations on a phenomenal photo... I love the composition AND the lighting here... the darkenss adds a great sense of 'old' and 'foreboding' to my interpretation of this image.... These old statues are beautiful. I wish I had the opportunity to make photos like this in America. Our doesn't even date back this far :) Great shot... = 10 - jmsetzler

This is a beautiful photo. The strong shadows add a lot to the mood and the regal bearing of the statue. One of my favourites! 10 - lisae

An interesting photo. I like the composition and the coloration of your picture, but for me it's a bit contrasty.
