 Thanks for all the great comments and the votes. I actually had this shot in my mind when I went out early on a warm foggy morning for a drive into the country. There are several farms one right after the other with horses in the pastures. I saw this single white mare standing alone amongst about 20 dark horses. I layed down below the fence and took a few shots. She was grazing and looked up to see what I was doing. Before you know it the entire herd came over to investigate and the white mare wandered off.
The final image was cropped, slight adjustments with levels, curves, a little desaturation and sharpened.

Oh this one literally takes my breath away! I love his ears being up like they are -- it gives you such a feeling of the connection between the horse and the photographer! A perfect photo!

Likes: The control over DOF, the attention the horse is giving to the frame, and the distant elements of the fence as contrasted to the coloring of the horse and the grass. All the elements carry a similar coloration, which binds the image well.

Dislikes: May not have been anything you could have done about it, but my eye is drawn to the edge of the fence line pretty quickly, taking me away from the portrait subject. Not having a bridle on the horse would have continued the isolated natural feel of the frame.
