This is a very nice photo. I like how you also have the pencils around the outside of the glass as well. The lighting was great to emphasize the effect. The focus is great and the angle is nice. I would have maybe tried to get the glass a bit more straight up and down. It kind of looks like it's tilting a bit. If you tried and couldn't, no big deal, just tell me to shut up. lol. Great job and good luck with the challenge.

(muted trumpet) Ba Ba Bwee Bah.
That one pencil hiding behind the glass (standing) is distracting with the eraser peeking out. Nice concept, and fairly well executed.

good example but would be more effective if the glass were off center

Interesting idea and nice colour and light. Would prefer the top of the glass not to be missing and for the glass itself to sit more vertically.

The colors on this shot are pretty dull, but could be helped with a levels/saturation adjustment in photoshop.

lacks ... something. Not sure what but it seems a very literal depiction of the subject so ends up not exciting me/ moving me/ interesting me. Yes it shows refraction.

I have the feeling you spent some time making this photo and technicaly it's good. But when you use a seamless background it needs to be ironed to remove the distracting wrinkles. In my opinion the whole glass should be in the frame and maybe even the main pencil as well.
