image a bit soft

I think the pencil tip in focus was important in this challenging shot.

a little too bright for me... not sure i get the concept... wish the book were turned to the definition of "pencil" ... 4 sjgleah

Very nice composition and lighting. I'd like to see more contrast though.

i like this...nice b&w...wish there were a bit more focus and the blowout wasn't quite so harsh. Maybe darken the whole image a bit? Lisa

A bit over exposed I think. Could use more DOF for focus...

I like the way the pencil dissolves into the distance. Interesting pattern and a good composition. Top ten.

Just lovely light and shadows, creating great shapes. Too much white out at the front of the book for me though.

a great photo. if only the book wasn't so washed out in the front
08/22/2002 09:38:00 PM
nice black and white

Nice work! Very brave to submit this here when voters typically dont like shallow DoF and overblown highlights. This seems intentional, though and I like it. 9 from me.

This is a really neat idea and I realize you were also trying to get the "light" into the photo too, but the washed out part on the book is a bit too light for my taste. This definately works with black and white. Aelith did a very similar angle of a book in the transparency challenge (only with glasses instead of a pencil). She got both compliments and criticism on having the book upside down. Personally, I like it because she made the good point, that if the book were right side up, our focus would have been drawn to the words, instead of the subject. The soft focus works well in the background like that. Good job and good luck in the challenge.

Nice, but why is it washed out at the bottom?
08/22/2002 07:56:00 AM
I like very much things in this picture (deep of field, composition, B&W used...). You have got a excellent 'pencilist' ambient (particularly because there is nothing distracting). I give it 9 because the overexposed left down corner. manolo

Perphaps the best picture of the challenge -my opinion, of course-. I can't give it 10 because there is a small zone overexposed where is impossible to see anything. (9).jcof

nice shot. The focus seems a little short. The composition is great and I love the light although it seems a little over exposed in the foreground. Nice job though.
08/21/2002 11:59:00 AM
interesting

The 'light and shadow' on this photograph are brilliant. I love the sharp focus and narrow depth of field. Good choice for black & white.
08/21/2002 10:25:00 AM
Good composition.

It's probably just me but, it seems a little too much of both.....light & shadow. It's not unattractive just a little harsh. I'm not sure what to suggest and hesitate to suggest anything. I have a feeling this is exactly what you were trying to achieve. =6 syamjonimi ;'-D

Nice use of B&W. Great lighting.

I love the focus and light in this. The shadows are wonderful.
08/20/2002 07:44:00 AM
beautiful lighting
08/19/2002 11:42:00 PM
The shadow play on this image is fantastic. However, it also results in that big white washed out area in the foreground. Would have also liked to see just a tad more sharpness at the tip of the pencil but I think the softness is also caused of the excessive light. Nice try though and will revisit this lateron this week. 6 Journey

subtle tones work well in this
08/19/2002 09:24:00 PM
image would look better if the book were right side up the contrast/brightness should be brought down several degrees.
08/19/2002 07:18:00 PM
simple, yet beautiful.
08/19/2002 06:49:00 PM
The burnt out spot near the bottom is a little distracting but overall i really like this picture. 7

I like the lighting, very contrasty. 5 -lennier

Little bit too much glare in the foreground. Nice concept.
08/19/2002 05:09:00 PM
this is overexposed, but a good idea.
08/19/2002 01:32:00 PM
simple idea, beautiful shot.
08/19/2002 01:02:00 PM
I like this picture, very nice B&W. I think the head of the pencil should have been in focus and maybe the 'white' area at the bottom is too white and too big.
overall 6
08/19/2002 08:31:00 AM
The focus appears to be centered on the words on the page instead of the pencil. I think Iwould have preferred the focus to be on the pencil. Wonderful use of shadows and black and white.
