This is an old elementary school desk we have in our home.
Doesn't a kid's life revolve around school?
When you're there, you're thinking about not being there and when you're away, you're counting the days until you're back...
Anyway, I dug out one of my favorite tomes from my own childhood, a 'Golden Classic' that was a beater when I was a kid, don't know where it came from, 'Tom Sawyer'. The pages are yellowed with age and the cover had been taped on with the old crystal clear "invisible" Scotch tape that made things turn orange after awhile. That was so long ago the tape is long since gone, just the orange stains are left on the cover, which now just happens to live next to the book as long you remember to put it back with the rest.
I put it on the desk, took a halogen work lamp firing at the desk and let the Dimage rip in B&W mode...
There it is - 'Childhood'.

Very "Little House on the Prairie" feeling! I like the sepia tone, the perspective and the composition. lhall

I can most definetely relate to reading a book. When I was a kid that's all I did. Read, read, read.

Great unusal perspective and composition. Feels very dark, or more accurately, lacking in contrast to me. Perhaps it's intentional, to add to the aged look, but everything blends too closely in to the colour of the next thing.

I love the warm feel to this photo. I can just imagine how smooth and worn the seat of the chair must be... Beautiful composition as well! 10 shedonist

Interesting, make me think of school days. Very brave to do B&W. Certainly learning a lot about using B&W like tones

Superb idea matched by a superb shot. The image toning really works well here giving the shot a feeling of childhood long passed. I also like the overall composition; it all works really wellâ€Â¦ (10)

Nice use of grain and color(lack of). Effectively makes one feel that this is something out of their past. Interesting composition too. Good job. TG

Really nice photo. i like the color (or lack there of). Very nicely done. The angle is great and frame placement is good too. I would like to see the color version of this also to compare. It's a nice touch with the light shining on the book like that. Great job and good luck in the challenge.

Wow this is great. The sepia makes it seem even older than ever and what is that book on the desk? Good job and good luck. 9.

Wow all those textures of wood look great! Good lighting and shadows too. This is one of my favorites!
08/26/2002 07:46:00 PM
this is nice. but i think the composition would have worked better with more book and less chair, imo. (7) ~mcmurma

Back in the old days. Nice B&W picture. Although i preffered playing outside, school was something of our youth as wekll, so perfectly for this challenge.

(P.S. What is that book? it looks REALLY familliar...)
08/26/2002 12:06:00 PM
This is a good B&W study but I prefer color. And I don't like to see the challenge title used in the photograph title, no way, no part, no how!

This needs a little something more....It seems to missing something but is really on the right track for this topic
