This was a possible part of a triptych but I decided against it. I worked on it today to convert to BW and I like the outcome.

Tank, 4 1/2

Great compositional choice to have him looking off-frame, supported by that strong diagonal line of his dark body. This is a hard shot to pull off and you've honored his nobility well.

tank is a great dog - love the lower key image - when i saw the thumb i really assumed this was going to be too dark, but the details and richness of this is much more than i could have imagined - really nice work.....as usual.

I'm thinking I like the "muted" tones in this shot...it seems to work for this photo...; )

This is such a hard shot to get right - I'm going to go ahead and advise you to get better detail in the blacks next time but honestly I don't know how you would do it. :) Great noble pose, I like how you composed your subject, but the darkest tones need more detail IMO. Can't tell if the overall shadowiness of the image is from processing or if it really was the light you had to work with on the day, but if this was shot when it was overcast, try something similar on a brighter, sunnier day and see if that helps.

what a sweet face..you did a great job here..I find taking pics of my black dog one of the hardest things to do...I really love the softness around his face...

Ooo! I missed this one. I love it! He looks protective, yet so lovable! I love the black and white conversion on this dark animal. It's fantastic!

Beautiful! He is dark, but in a good, makes me want to reach out & pet his softness. kind of way. The contrast of his fur against the background makes him POP to me. The eyes are also great... strong work!

Cute shot but I thinkg it's a bit dark. Darker pets are harder to shoot because they blend in so well, I've tried quite a few different lighting techniques on my children's dog (which is quite dark as well).

I agree with routerguy. Tags does seem a bit dark, which steals away from that sweet face. I also like the background fence. It adds a nice touch.

I like everything about this I just wish the dog, or at least his face, were just a bit brighter. As it is my eye keeps getting pulled to the bright spot on the fence behind. Other than that, the processing is great, composition is great, placing the pooch in front of the fence was a good choice, etc. Nice stuff.

Ah, what a sweetie! Love dogs, and he looks so soulful. Maybe just a little more contrast here to bring out his eyes and details in fur?

Jeeeez, I love that dog! He has such grande, noble eyes, with wonderful catchlight in them. He makes such a nice black and white subject because of the light on him creates beautiful degrees of black in his fur.

He looks so devoted! And the connection you feel as you look at him in this photo makes this a standaout.

I really love this shot. What a cute dog! I like how the dog's eyes are facing off, yet we can see a catchlight in them. The only thing bothering is her paws are cropped off near the bottom. Well done!

Very nice pet portrait. I love the composition in terms of the 'pose' and angle of the head, only possible change might be in terms of the background as the fence (for me) detracts a touch (especially the white support strut and the diagonal which intersects the dogs head. Not sure if you could have got more Bokeh and kept the image at the quality it is though, but if you couldnt then maybe a background which had a more repetitive 'pattern' to it which (I think) would have made the subject stand out more

What a beautiful dog. Great pose and a wonderful background too. It looks a bit dark to me though.

This is such a beautiful, gentle portrait of this animal, makes him seem very sensitive.

My only thought is I'd like to have seen the full dogs (front paws and all - GRIN!)

Lovely composition in the frame, and a great pose.
I know you were going for a dark feel, and i think it definately works, however i think if the highlights on the dog were just slightly brighter it would give him/her more definition and a stronger presence.
Good shot.

what a proud looking dog.
i'm sure it is straight, but the post in the background keeps unbalancing me a little.
but overall it's a great portrait of the dog.

ps; I forgot to say, that I also love the dog.....

Wow what a beautiful animal. I think I would have tried a bit of fill flash to fill in some shadows but you did a great job having him pose for you. I bit of a vignette may have helped also darken the corners, but the bright area on the gate really helps to pop him out. NIce job, Jack
