Challenge: Selective Desaturation II (Advanced Editing V)
Collection: Challenges 2007
Camera: Canon EOS-30D
Lens: Canon EF 24-105mm f/4.0L IS
Location: Wiesbaden, Germany
Date: May 17, 2007
Aperture: f/5.6
ISO: 1600
Shutter: 1/200
Date Uploaded: May 20, 2007

This delightfully cheerful woman and her friend (not shown) adorn the window of a local coffee shop. While I do not expect a good score with this, I learned a lot in processing it and thank my teammates for their input with the tweaks (and for not having a cow that I'm submitting it). My best option for this challenge was a shot I took the day before the challenge was announced, unfortunately. My second choice, shot during the challenge period, would undoubtedly score better but was a simple desat of all colors but one. I think this one best represents the challenge and best represents learning new skills.

Used a mask to isolate parts of the mannequin to stay in color; used CS3's black and white conversion. Tweaked color saturation, dodged the eye to bring it out a bit. Added slight vignetting with the gradient tool on a blank layer with soft light blending mode.

Very cool reflected shot! The clarity in the reflection is astounding. I like how the two walkers seem to be look at the primary subject. Very nice coloring! Wonderful shot.

This is a beautiful photograph, from concept to capture to processing. If I'd voted, I would have increased your "10" scores. Thanks for adding the workflow and it's now a favorite.

Deb, I loved this one and gave it a 9. I think it is an excellent use of selective desat. Without the desat, the mannequin blends into the background too much and the whole image is a jumble. You got a pretty good score for this considering that it is very off-beat. I think many voters just thought WTF and moved along quickly.

Nice job Deb, this shot kind of reminds me of jaysonmc's "Somewhere between cherry and madness". I really like it. Good job.

Well above 50% Deb. Your shot hung in there well. Very nice work. Good attention to detail, especially now being able to see the original. Well done.

I almost gave this a 7. I gave it a 6 and a half. I really do like the picture. It's just that I thought it would be better without the selective desat. I could be wrong!

Wow! I think this is amazing! It is so strikingly unique. She almost looks like a disney character. I absolutely love this! I'm really surprised that it didn't place much higher too. It looks very artistic and dpc-friendly.

Great interesting perspective, and like how you framed it so that the pedestrians appear to be looking at your "model". Nice use of selective desat.

How intriguing and thought provoking but very confusing. I think I like it, I certainly like two pedestrians in the background looking towards her but I wonder if most if not all of the near one could have been cropped? I will be interested to see how you have done this. Good luck.
