Yes, my husband did hold still like that for the whole 8 seconds ! He's a great model. It was also "set up". In fact, I think in total, I took about 30 shots until I got the look that I was going for - I'd take 5 or 10 ten shots, dump them onto the computer to see how they looked, then go back and try again. It was a lot of fun, but more important for me, it taught me a lot about shutter speed and aperture, and how to achieve an effect.

I love this shot a 10! First time I looked at it was today and I had to write cause I couldn't take my eyes off it. was it just a point and shoot or did you set it up?

At a night race (AHDRA Motorcycle Racing) some years ago, my husband was walking away from me and stopped to light a cigarette. All I could see in the dark was his face lit by the lighter and cigarette. The whole "picture" looked very mysterious and intriguing and I loved how the "negative space" of the dark emphasized his face. I have always planned to do a painting based on that image in my mind, but thought that it was perfect for the Neg Spc challenge. Thank you for all the great comments, I appreciate everyone's time - and congrats to all, I loved the images in this challenge. Linda |

Even though I HATE smoking (we ex-smokers are the least tolerant) I love this image. Very, very nice. Strikes me as a cowboy, and reminds me a little of my own beloved husband. Good use of neg space to meet the challenge, but what I like best is the wonderful lighting and coloring. Good luck in the challenge! Grayce aka Gracious |

Very well done. Perhaps a little more information or detail in the hands. This meets the theme quite well.

I love this! Very dramatic. There's a really ominous sense that this guy is waiting for something, in the middle of the night, and you wouldn't know he was there except that he's lighting that cigarette. 10 - lisae |

I love the way the blackness surrounds him and bleeds into the shadows of his face, hat and hands - the darkness really drives us in close to him - the way the light shows us his only his face and hand makes it very intimate. This wouldn't work with any other background. Feels like a shared moment in time. 10, Kavey |

Awesome. The light is just right, the exposure is right on. Wish there were more negative space though. 9 paganini |

a.k.a. The Marlboro Man. This is an interesting photo. Well exposed for the amount of light put out by the match/lighter. I'm trying to get more emotion from the photo but I really can't and I think it's because of the lack of any level of ambient lighting to pull some detail out of the other parts of the model's body. It seems like a nighttime shot of a cowboy except that it is literally pitch black with nothing else. It works as it is but for me it could have more impact if there were at least a little bit of ambient light for more detail and shadow. Score: 8 Courtenay |

nice use of negative space here. good lighting on his face, and i like that the brim of his hat is visible jsut a little bit. this is nitpicky, but i wish his whole neck had been covered up so that that little triangle didn't poke through. good shot :) -- gr8photos (7) |
