Challenge: Duotones III (Advanced Editing V)
Camera: Nikon D50
Lens: Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM for Nikon
Location: albany waterfront

Aperture: 10
ISO: 200

Date Uploaded: Nov 8, 2007

Kind of interesting, this was my first shot I took and was more of a test which is why the bottom of the pillar is cut off.

The bird didn't move for 30 secs really during the exposure, even though it was cold and windy.

Chose the "Sole Survivor" and less than 10 hours later there was an oil spill about 15 miles away in the bay.

Random

Editing:Exposed the image twice, once for the foreground and once for clouds. On the foreground I ran a levels adjustment to brighten everything and lighten the water. On the top I copied the layer on multiply and faded the effect. Did a special level for the thing in the bottom right. Flattened, and tonemapped but faded way back. Used a gradient map and selective color adjustment to make black and white. Flattened the image and background and set to 50% opacity and did the dodging and burning. Ran shadows/highlights on had it selecitviley effect different parts. Used two color balance layers one in color and one in Pin light with different opacities to give it the tone.

Post challenge:Thank you everyone for the kind votes and comments! I am very happy to have ribboned in this challenge with so many great shots.
My inspiration for this shot started with this image by Germaine . In this photo she had a link to David Burdeny's photography. Between these two I went out and tried to do something in that vein. Good call Sarcoman :). Thanks again everyone!

Wow, you sure the bird wasn't frozen? lol...they can survive in cold, but only in spurts and then they have to retreat into a trunk or cave. The bird is blurry, but so small that it doesn't take away from the great scene. Very surreal.

The effect of the time exposure on the water and sky really makes this picture. Thanks to the bird for holding the pose. Great shot!

8 - Nice image. Fairly minor, but looks like the horizon is out by a whisker. Undecided whether the image would be even stronger with the corner of that block in, but also 'minor'. Like your title/concept. Tonings work well.

That is a very cool effect -- i like the softness of the majority of the photo and how it contrasts with the harshness of the structure.

I kinda like this one... The long exposure effect in the sky is nice, a little over the top in the sea IMHO but over all it is a nice picture... The bird there adds a contrast to the long exposure effect....
