Pink 6-inch Calla Lily from the local grocery store. Shot indoors hand-held in black and white mode. Light source: 20W table lamp.

Cropped, added border and converted to black monotone in Photoshop. Took many shots from many angles before I landed on this one. Even though it is not sharply in focus, I prefer this soft feel. Almost looks like a clay sculpture.

Lack of focus means very little feel of the texture.

This shot seems to be out of focus. Good idea for the challenge though.

I know that calla lilies have texture but this shot is so soft and/or out of focus that I can't see any texture, just looks soft and fuzzy to me, color may have helped
02/23/2004 10:18:41 AM
supposed to be soft i presume, but doesn't work for me
02/22/2004 10:27:21 PM
Too blurry, sloppy cropping

Needs focus work.
02/22/2004 09:38:24 AM
I think it needs a focus point somewhere in the shot, too soft for a texture challenge. just my opinion of course.

Sorry...I'm not getting any feeling of texture here.
02/21/2004 05:52:50 PM
not very much texture here

Gosh, you're going to get a bunch of out-of-focus comments, I guess. There is a kind of 1920's still life photography kind of look to this, though I'd suggest it's about fading of light more than it's about texture. Your cropping lets that feel down though - excluding the top of the flower, and cutting off the other in the background: I think you'd at least score higher if you'd included both, and allowed some progression of focus within the image - this way, the rear flower looks like an accident.

Too soft to show texture- even a smooth one.

artistically very nice - would like a larger dof for the challenge to get the sense of the texture you saw.

The soft focus eliminates all the texture and is probably too soft.

Errr.............
Its a nice picture ...
But - there is no texture to be seen, the petals are out of focus and there is some noise in the picture - possibly due to high ISO.

I'm sure the soft focus effect is intentional, I just found it rather grey and lifeless
personal preference really

really grainy. I like the soft focus, it works well here, but I'm not really clicking with this shot. there is something that is not holding my interest. maybe if it were just the front flower, but I'm thinking that the rear flower is taking away something from the shot. black and white works well with the soft focus. ~Heather~

This is nice. The soft focus works for me, but you'll probably get other comments against it. Very styled looking and smooth, soft texture.

Out of focus.

Sharpness is too low to appreciate the texture of the calla.

You know I think this works for the most part, -----the soft focus doesn't along with the crop. The top is trimmed too tight. Sorry.

unfortunately, it's too out of focus to show it's texture

Soft focus makes for a dreamy appearance, but could use something actually in sharper focus to catch my eyes attention as the subject of this shot and add to flower's surface texture.

The soft focus doen't shot the texture. Maybe I am missing something. 5

general composition and background depth of field is good, but the overall soft focus on the calla has minimized textural qualities.

The texture here is not a subject feature, but a high ISO settings. To me it´s don´t meet the challenge. You do a great job despite of all I like this picture, but can vote it against my judge.

Hard to see, let alone feel, the texture when I can't make out any detail.

grainy, noisy out of focus. nice composition

I love the composition on this, and the bw really gives it an interesting twist. I do think, however, that the soft focus (while normally effective for shots like this) kinda hurts since it is a "texture" challenge, and the texture isn't real obvious, to me.

Might have benefitted from a bit more DOF, main subject seems a bit out of focus as well.
