Jon - I said " I needed to use the burn tool" not That "I did...". Read the comment I left after voting and there is a link to the version I "would have liked to have posted" i.e. after using the burn tool to take out the hotspot.
Cheers

"Ruins of a Norman Motte & Bailey Castle built by William the conqueror. REALLY needed to use the burn tool on this due to the hotspot in the middle."
and no one challenged this? the burn tool is a spot editing tool. did the rules change without me noticing? |

Wow, thanks for all the wonderfull comments. Lots of questions too. Well, as in the details, it's the ruins of a very old (about 800 yrs funnily enough) castle near where I live. Yes' it is IR and yes, it was shot using a Hoya R72 filter - the cheapest I could find. There's not a lot more to say really.
As for overexposed/blown out in the centre. Yep - unfortunately my camera isn't the best for IR shots. The lens configuration causes a 'hotspot' in the centre of the image. Keeping the lens open as much as possible and as wide as possible keeps it to a minimum, otherwise it shows up as a hard edged over exposed circle. Most times it can be overcome by using the burn tool but obviously that would be against the rules.
A copy that has been touched up can be seen here.

Amazing shot. is this Infra-red? I can't wait to find out what camera you used with what infrared filter. Is this a Hoya 72? I hope you post your settings after the voting is done. -phlebotiss |

I like the infrared and I'm very jealous that my camera's technology won't allow it. Even though I can't tell what I'm looking at, stone or ivy, I'm drawn into it. I'm sure uncompressed and normal size, there wouldn't be a question. Another thing I like about this photo is that it would be a great shot even in normal color. joanns |

This is fantastic, looks like infrared. What filters did you use. It is eerie on the one hand but also has a fairy-tale setting about it. Good job.

Outstanding infrared photo!!! This is a definite *wow* for me...the lighting is almost mythical...making it appear that a supernatural force is drawing attention to the location and it was for just your benefit. God smiled on you for this one...well done! |

wow, nice IR photo. title matches it well, really looks old and somewhat alien, too.
challenge met -- yes composition / appeal -- good. i like how your photo is 'layered' with the wall in the front, then the ruins, then the trees. technical -- good overall -- 7 gr8photos :) |

i would love to see a tutorial on the extraordinary effect you've gotten here. I assume you're shooting IR with the filter, but how you choose the site and predict what will happen would be oh so helpful. you obviously have a very keen eye. 10 crisa 58 |

This sort of reminds me of an Ansel Adams shot. Nice but I think this could be a little more crisply focused. I'm having difficulty seeing what is in the center. I still like it though. Good luck in the challenge. Grayce aka Gracious |

Was this a model or a real scene. Level adjustments or the use of an IR filter would have really made this image pop. |
