Challenge: Long Exposure III (Basic Editing)
Camera: Canon PowerShot S3 IS
Location: Central Milton Keynes
Date: Dec 15, 2007
Aperture: f6.3
ISO: 100
Shutter: 5 seconds

Date Uploaded: Dec 17, 2007

I took this shot from on top of the multi story carpark at Milton Keynes Station.

MK is renowned in the UK for the number of roundabouts it has...That total depends on what you call a roundabout. If you mean a fully formed structure with its own name and grass and flowers, then 300 is a generally agreed number. But if you mean anything which affects the gyratory movement of traffic (e.g. a painted bump in the middle of the road designed to control traffic within a housing estate) then figures as high as 1000 are bandied about.

They work fantastically to expedite traffic flow in the city but I know from North American friends that these are not used a great deal in the States and Canada and are therefore viewed with a mixture of fear and trepidation

The exposure actually shows how well they work with two ars approaching the roudabout from different directions and being able to carry on their journeys without having to stop.

I really like this shot, therefore am expecting it to bomb

It was taken on a 5 second exposure with my tripod wedged on the security fencing on the car park

Jon this should have done much better. I go so far as to say you were robbed and the bandits made a clean get away by going the wrong direction on a roundabout.

Jon
I liked this a lot - i love roundabouts and the lights turning were really cool. Gave it a 7 during voting. I just think a cleaner foreground (lose the tree) would have made this come off a bit better. Chain saws sure can really come in handy for DPC shots..

I have been to Europe many times and have to admit that I think traffic circles (American for roundabout) are a truly wonderful invention, It seems we are beginning to add them to shopping centers and places with light traffic. I hope they catch on.

This photo is well done, the streaks of light adding to the eerie night feeling. I love the twinkles of the street lights.

Too bad this did not score higher - it's a really good pic. The competition must have been pretty tough in this one. I like the tree in the foreground as it seems to be holding up the center of the round. Also fun - it looks like there's a ghost in the bottom triangle - pretty cool!

"Fear" and "Trepidation" are not the words I use to describe my feelings when I come upon the VERY RARE roundabout (I know of two in the KC Metro area). More like, "Whoa, what is THAT thing? what to do what to do what to do???? Where's the brake???" But yes, it is a nice image that shows the benefits of continually moving traffic. (You do realize though that the cars are in the wrong lanes, right?)

I like the idea but I think the trees in the foreground are distracting.

Maybe just slightly too much color saturation. But lot's of visual interest all about in this shot.

The foreground is a bit busy.

this sort of shot is very close to my heart, and you've done it very well. I'm not too keen on the tree in the foreground, but you can't help that.
