Struggling to get anything really sharp at the moment. Don't know if it's my eyes :) or the new camera. This is the first time I've used the new camera for macro.

ETA. For macro shots I always manually expose, manually focus and use a tripod. However, I have found out (from reading the manual no less - what an amazing concept!) that I had to adjust a setting on the camera (as well as on the lens) when using manual focus. Let's see if this helps :)

Textbook example of: rule of thirds, proper exposure (love how the petals glow from the inside, it seems), use of a strong diagonal, and appropriate use of a square crop. Simply gorgeous!

White is often hard to photograph, but you have done this so well. Very delicate and alluring.....

Well, I don't think you'll complain about the sharpness of this one: it's sharp where it's intended to be by the DOF!! It is my experience that with a macro lens, even with a fairly small aperture, you'll get a smaller DOF than with a regular lens at the same aperture.

Great image Sarah...you have a great camera/lens combo, so maybe there was movement, but this looks sharp to me

Hey Sarah!

If you're anywhere near 40, it's your eyes. hahaha!!! :op

I don't find this lacks sharpness at all. It's an outstandingly beautiful image. The droplets, and the various whites, the DOF and crop - all stunning.

The softness of the image is what makes this special. The petals are beautiful and the water drops amazing and the POV and DOF are brilliant. Thanks for taking this lovely photo.

Beautiful detail in the petals! Lovely! And water droplets always look so pretty against petals, something I am going to try later this month! :o)

The resulting softness in this image really comes off very nicely. I love the water droplets and the yellow highlight in the center. Nice focal point. Great choice of lighting and detail in the veining of the petals.

edit: VR software needs retraining... removed gibberish.

I agree with the others that say the softness works here and this is a lovely image. However, to answer the question in your post, try turning off autofocus and using manual focus -- I've found that works much better for me for macro shots.

fwiw, it appears the sharpest spot in this image is along a line about 1/3 of the way up from the bottom, and it appears the focus seems to have caught the droplets on the leading edge of the petals. You would expect f/13 to pull everything in sharp here, but macro is tricky that way.

Lovely shot. The softness works well for this subject, but I can see where it would be frustrating. Did you manually set the aperture and shutter? Would it help to use a faster shutter speed and a smaller aperture and perhaps lower the risk of any camera shake?

Well I think you struck the perfect balance between softness and sharp detail here. This is a beautiful photo.

Nice flower and droplet shot. Dew or spritzer? A couple of spots on petals opposite sides of center could have been cloned out. Lovely shot suited for the square crop.
