Challenge: Environmental Portrait II (Basic Editing)
Camera: Sony DSC-W200
Location: San Diego Zoo
Date: Mar 15, 2008
Galleries: Portraiture, Animals
Date Uploaded: Mar 18, 2008

Adjust colors, crop to about 25% to remove as much background distraction as possible, USM, resize, save for web.
I got a lot of shots in the San Diego Zoo animal shows, but this was one of only a couple where the person was looking at me. I did not get the person to pose, just caught the right moment of walking the stage and talking to the audience.

I'd be willing to bet that a lot of folks aren't going to like this shot. I however love it. I'm sure you will get omments like "snap-shottish" but I am going to say...yes, there is an element of snap-shot, an element of the candid. But they are all add up to capture someone in their environment. The environment defines the subject and tells us something about her and she is doing what she does within that environment. Well done.

Cute! I like the composition, but a) there seems to be a bit of a motion blur, and b) I would have manipulated the DOF to include the emu (unless the blurriness is just more motion blur?), as he is as important to the portrait as the woman is. Since the bushes behind are more in focus than the emu, you probably would have been safe to focus on the emu, then both of them would have been within the DOF. Also, a slightly softer expression on her face would have made the portrait easier to stay looking at.

I find the emu more interesting than the handler, to be honest!

This looks a bit backfocused; I see good defiition on the bushes and ferns behind the subject, but the beak and eye of the emu are a bit soft.

Emu's focus looks a little blurry. Her expresssion is not flattering either.

out of focus bird, slightly out of focus person. Looks like a typical snapshot at a zoo...2

The emu is oof. It almost looks fake.

focus seems off it's not on the bird not completely on the womans face. this has the feel of a snapshot rather than a portrait.

Focus is rather soft and lighting a bit harsh. I like the "why are you taking my picture" expression on the subject's face.
