Challenge: Pattern III (Basic Editing)
Collection: 2008
Camera: Canon PowerShot S5 IS
Location: A chair in my dining room
Date: Mar 24, 2008
Aperture: F8.0
ISO: 80
Shutter: 1/2 Sec.
Galleries: Macro, Transportation
Date Uploaded: Mar 25, 2008

Came pretty close to getting the image I had envisioned. I initially tried this with my Rebel XT, but due to lack of a macro lens, I was not able to get the close perspective I wanted. Redid it with the S5 IS, and got what I needed. Had my white balance settings off a little, so toning down the color cast also subdued the bright yellow background. In spite of that, this shot was still easily the best of the bunch, my lighting was just right to show off the tread pattern and I got a nice perspective view.

Pre-challenge notes:
I think I did a great job on this one, so I'm hoping for a high five, and dreaming of a mid-6. My scores have been all over the place lately, however, so even a high-4 won't surprise me.

Post-challenge notes:
I'm really disappointed in the way this did. I thought I had a really good one, but apparently it was just okay. Perhaps the pattern was not a larger element of the image? On the other hand, looking at the breakdown, more people thought it was a 6 or 7 than thought it was a 3 or 4. I may have just missed that "broad appeal" thing again. Or maybe I just over analyze things...

Havent read any one else comments yet, so here is what I see.

Love the yellow against the black. The yellow bit on the tire ties it into the background too. I like the angle on this, it is coming forward and is right in your face.

The thing that I keep looking at though is the white thing on the tire, is it a cobweb? it keep drawing my eye to it to see what it is and the tiny leaf stuck in your ridge. Isnt it silly as to what we find when we study the pictures.

I personally would have liked to have seen the right side of the tire tread a bit more though rather than blackness and no detail.

I scored this one a 7.

The yellow background is a great choice against the black, it also matches well with the golden part of the rubber. I personally like the shadow. I think I agree with Deb on the position though, this would work better with the tire in the air.

I can't add any more to what others have said. I liked seeing this during the challenge. I thought the yellow background was a good choice to help make the wheel just pop out of the picture. Something fun to try here tho would be to do a border like BHuseman did with this photo . I think it would be fun to see the wheel just kind of 3-D pop out of the background. And if you do this, and figure out how to do it, let me know lol.

I think this has some solid technicals - focus, good contrast of colors, nice lines and angles, but my impression of the shot is that there is actually a few conflicting sets of patterns that disrupt the viewer. The tire tread is a great set of patterns and carries our eyes through the image, but the spokes of the wheel is another set of patterns and one that actually confounds us a bit. But the main patterns that don't seem to work for me are the shadows - especially to the right of the image. A tire without the wheel on the same background with a bit more light coming from the right to fill the background - or a placement farther away from the backround so that the shadow is diminished - may have worked a lot better.

Call me odd, but I think this would have worked with the wheel in the air, especially given your title. :-) It does show the pattern well and I like the corresponding pattern of the distorted by perspective wheel against the more circular shadow. That said, your outtake with the two spokes is better technically and for the challenge - the background on that one is brighter, more cheerful, a better yellow. As you noted here, toning down the color cast hurt this a bit. The angle of this one is more dymamic, more challenging, whereas the angle of your outtake is more sedate, more common if you will. The outtake also has more of the focus on the tread pattern, especially with the use of the shallow DOF, where here the "feel" is more for the structure of the wheel itself, more taken as a whole.

Great eye, perspective and color. One of my favorites in the whole bunch.

I like the background color that you chose because part of the tire has that color. The detail is also very nice.

You've sort of cut off the bottom the tire. You lose the fluidity of the arc with the cropping at the bottom.

Nice idea and certainly fits the challenge. Nice angle with the tyre leaving the frame and nice bold colours.

it could have been better if you could see more of the tire.

goo idea using a solid colored background, but i think it would be better if you could see more of the tire, at least to the point were the circle starts to come back around.
