Bear has these wonderfully expressive, droopy eyes. He loves to sleep on the couch and has been prevented from doing so for many months because of four (two on each knee) TPLO surgeries. Here he has just returned from a walk on Oilwell Flats and is, of course, on the couch and wanting to stay there.

TPLO surgery involves leveling of the tibial plateau. He basically blew both of his CCL's in his knees (or what would be the equivalent of an ACL in humans) They have to re-align the angle of the knee and put a metal plate and screws in the bone to hold it in place while it heals. Bear's bones are dense and he is a large (and young and active) dog. Despite keeping him very quiet and confined for weeks following surgery, the first surgery on each knee failed. The first time, the screws literally sheared and the knee displaced. The second surgery on that knee involved re-leveling and placing a heavier plate on his knee. They used a heavy-duty plate on the second knee, but it failed as well. Now he has two plates on that knee. He probably would not make it through a metal detector, but he is walking fine now and is doing all the things a dog should do. I found him at our local shelter when he was just a puppy, and he is such a wonderful dog, I shudder to think what would have happened to him if we had not found him. He is an absolute joy.

Wow, that's quite the story. Even before I read your comments I was thinking how sad he looks.

By the look of those eyes Patsy, Bear knows exactly who his best friend is. What a wonderful story and an even better outcome. Hope Bear lives a trouble free life from here on.

Great shot and kudos for rescuing this dog from a shelter. WE have a shelter dog too, and she is proving to be quite the challenge.
