Challenge: Something New II (Advanced Editing II)
Camera: Canon PowerShot G3
Location: just outside the Neighborhood Danceworks office

Aperture: 2
ISO: 50
Shutter: 1/10

I was in a client's neighborhood and figured I'd stop in to see them rather than call later as we had planned. When I looked in her office she was seeing someone so I waited in the stairwell. There was a sun roof at the top that was bringing some nice light in, so I figured I'd snap a few.

I liked this image of the feet and the detail of the railing - it really gave me the impression of someone waiting. But it wasn't quite strong enough of an image until a friend suggested desatching everything but the feet. And bingo.

The focus is a little soft because I had to shoot at a slightly slower than acceptable shutter for handheld to get a good exposure. I leaned against the wall behind me for support when I shot it, and I sharpened a little with USM in PS, but its still a little off.

So in PS I cropped, bumped the contrast a little, USM'd, took into Neat Image, back to PS where I selected the feet and legs and copied to a new layer then desaturated the layer below, resized.

I like the desaturated effect of this photo. I think the staircase has great vectors and lighting, but the shoes seem out of place.

That is some old school building...the railings and landing are very nice in BW and I like thecomposition of the blue jeans and sneaks. my only concern here is the non-leveled look of the ralling in the right third....I assume those are your jeans and shoes so I think if you had taken this with you more on angle the leveling might not appear as off....interesting idea and fine execution.

I like the selective desaturation. I'm sure others will knock you for it.

I really like this, the selective saturation works very well here drawing the viewer's attention to the student's feet. VERY well done.

I dont get it...but the selective desaturation is good.

The technique to desaturate all but one object or color is OK to know but it is way overdone and there really is not much call to use it anywhere really. However, you have done an EXCEPTIONAL job with it in this image. The technical quality here is about the best I have ever seen at this site. This is one of the best images in this challenge.

It is one of my top three choices.

Without the selective desaturation, the idea of the image would be lost. The feet seem almost super saturated. I can't decide if I like it our not... 7

Hm... interesting idea. Cant help but thinking the poles create a chaotic, distracting, pattern which is preventing me from be at rest with the composition. . 6.
