Greetings from the Critique Club!

*scratching head* compression artifacts? Where, Spiffy? *ahem* now on with the critique...

Initial impression: Very simple, powerful image. Less is more and it definitely works here. I voted quickly, which is probably why I only gave it a 6. Now, looking at it more, it warrants a 7.

Technical: Great setting, great thirds, nice murky image which offsets the flat blackness of the bulk of the figure...as has been noted already, as though a human has been cut out of the image. Deliberate or not, it works very well. Surprised at your settings - very shallow DOF, very high ISO and shutter speed. But it works.

Artistic: The note in hand makes me wonder if it is a summons of sorts. Wow, there really is a Loch Lomond?! I thought it was just a fictitous brand of whisky drunk by Captain Haddock in the Tintin series :-) And yes, the effective negative space does draw the eye to the person. Didn't even notice the not-perfectly level horizon until it was pointed out, which may help add to an unsettling feel.

Overall: Very well done image, quiet but menacing at the same time. What will the note tell the person to do?

Feel free to PM me with any questions,

Susan

Could you point out the areas of 'compression' spiff? :)

i like how the figure is completely black, like a person shaped hole in the photograph. very cool and the paper in his hand and white on his shoes set off the effect nicely.

This has the beginnings of a spooky film. I like the use of negative space and how the contrasts work to pull our eye to the person in the hoody. The title certainly works for a movie too. 7

Not a movie poster.

*Knock, knock* JPEG police here, we have a warrant.

Watch your JPEG compression. You have lost a lot of clarity in this image with the use of excessive compression. There are obvious artifacts around the figure and rock he is on. Always use the least amount of compression that you can and still come in under the challenge limit (200k for this one)

Aside from that, it's a well done photo, and the title sounds like a movie. I am sure it will do well, and I will be the only anal retentive voter to see the compression artifacts.

Awesome shot. With some text, this will, for sure look like a movie poster, I believe. For this challenge, this image looks amazing to me.

Great work here.

Good, feasible movie title - loads of negative space which works really well for this genre.

Well shot (though the coast line might look better horizontal); achieve the right 'feel'.

I'm sure this will do well.
