This is an OKUMA vertical drill machine center. The drill is rotating at 450 rpms as it drills the steel part. The liquid solutions are rust inhibitors and coolant for the process.

12th is close enough for me... I'm looking for feedback moreso than scores. This week's feedback confirms my ideas that I need to make my photos more appealing to the subjective voter...

Hey John, I'm surprised this did not finish in the top 10. Very good shot! Keep up the great work.

Thanks for all the comments and your votes on this photo. This is an Okuma Vertical Drill. I only had one person comment that the drill may not be moving so I'm happy with that. The drill was rotating at 450 rpms and if you look, you can see that coolant is swirling and slinging from the drill. I never expected to finish this high because of all the 'subjective' whining in the forums.... Thanks!

I think you would have placed higher if more people understood the subject. I did and I definately appreciate how well you stopped the action. Those machines run very fast. If you are ever in my area I'll bet my company would love some photos like this for our brochure and webpage.

Obviously an Icelandic influence there!
04/21/2002 05:00:00 PM
What are you drilling?
04/21/2002 04:49:00 PM
The best use of liquid Ive seen all day
04/20/2002 09:39:00 PM
great catch of an explosion.

Boring can be interpreted more than one way. Bad choice for name of picture. An interesting shot but the observer needs to have knowledge of the machine word to appreciate it. Good stopping of motion both in the coolant and the drill bit. I don't see any chips so the drill might not be actually turning so then it would just be a picture of stopped coolant.

Don't know what it is, but you could have left out the lower half of this photo and had a winner. Its beautiful and you did an excellent job of capturing. Too bad about the bottom.

Nice variation on the water theme ... plus having the drill bit ... thumbs up!
04/19/2002 03:37:00 PM
Great image, very busy, nice contrast of colors (silver/gold). Work on your titles, k?
04/19/2002 01:38:00 PM
This is a really neat image. I can't tell what this is being poured on and the color of the liquid looks cool. I'm not giving you a higher rating than 6 because I'm saving those for the more original images that do not use liquid.
04/19/2002 07:25:00 AM
great stop motion, but there seems to be too much going on
04/19/2002 01:29:00 AM
yowzers! this has real effect! a gold burr and industrial juice whirling all around. and good focus too.
04/18/2002 06:51:00 PM
Wow -- definitely some exciting action here. Nice job.
04/18/2002 08:51:00 AM
Hardly boring. {g} Better without the XXX in the LRHC.
04/17/2002 05:01:00 PM
The different directions and colours of the liquid help add the contrast needed against the (rather bright) metal.
04/17/2002 02:29:00 PM
Good "stoppage." I like the way the colors work in this picture.
04/16/2002 05:59:00 PM
This is an eye catcher, what are we boring today?
04/16/2002 04:36:00 PM
Cool picture! Very sharp stopped action.
04/16/2002 12:32:00 PM
This is a great photo. Is this a CNC machine?
04/16/2002 11:42:00 AM
the title is misleading becasue this photo is anything but boring. nice job!
04/16/2002 09:51:00 AM
A novel idea, and a great shot.
04/15/2002 10:04:00 PM
Not boring at all ;) Nice shot!!
04/15/2002 07:48:00 PM
Tokk me a while to figure out what this was until I looked at the title again. You definitely stopped the motion. Seems very clinical. Needs something to make it more appealing as a product photograph. Maybe a different viewing angle?
04/15/2002 06:27:00 PM
nothing boring about it.
04/15/2002 05:03:00 PM
Just let anyone say this is just another boring water shot! up to now this is 1st - screams quality!
04/15/2002 02:50:00 PM
Actually, I have to say this is not so boring! (Yes, I do get it). I think this is the best of the 'liquid' shots. Good composition, interesing subject, busy, very clear. I like!
04/15/2002 02:00:00 PM
water.. go figure
04/15/2002 01:40:00 PM
The winner! I can relate to this. How did you start the drill on edge of part like that? Need a job?
04/15/2002 01:08:00 PM
whats going on here.. i like the chaos
04/15/2002 12:30:00 PM
what's going on here
04/15/2002 12:12:00 PM
I'm guessing by the title that you're frusterated? :)
04/15/2002 11:59:00 AM
04/15/2002 11:34:00 AM
What's going on?
04/15/2002 10:11:00 AM
I like it. Had to look at it a few times to figure out what it is. Very nice!
04/15/2002 09:29:00 AM
It's anything but =]
04/15/2002 09:07:00 AM
Not boring at all... (yes I did get it) Good shot, lots of action and motion. Depth of field used to good effect to blur the background - seems slightly titled/ at an angle though - maybe have been better really straight on to the side.
04/15/2002 07:28:00 AM
This is honestly one of my favorite pictures this week. The stop action is awesome. The mixture of color is wonderful. I wish I could find something to complain about but I can't.
04/15/2002 03:21:00 AM
smack my head and call me silly, but I'm struggling to work out what's going on in this picture.
