...from Critique Club...
Hi Nancy...
FIRST IMPRESSION: The look on this kids face is priceless. :)
COMPOSITION: Nice. The placement of the kid is very good. The bucket stand is a bit distracting because of the different leg angles. I'm really not too crazy about that bush looking like a 'mohawk' hairdo on the kid. I understand why you made it BW, but in doing so you still got stuck with the jacket being the same shade as the bucket, and, honestly, it took me a bit longer to figure out what was going on in the photo...a different angle could have helped. I do understand the circumstances in which it was shot, and in photojournalism there seems to always be compositional imperfections, which differenciate the photo from a 'setup' photo. :|
TECHNICAL: Really nice focus on the the kid and the bucket. I would have tried a shot with a wider aperture (2.8 maybe) and try to eliminate background detail. Lighting seems natural and his face is nicely lit. :)
ARTISTIC: This shot is very nice looking. It sure tells a story...a great story, and it is worthy of a newspaper article. Your timing was perfect with the bell being held up...it makes me stare and wait for it to go down and ring...awsome how you caugh him looking at someone else (candid)...nice 'tension' shot. Beautiful kid, interesting to look at. :)
OVERALL: A very unique photo that stands out in the challenge. Well deserved placing. :)
SIDE NOTE: I had to get very picky on this one...cause at a first look I thought it was great :) |

I think this is a well deserved 11th place finish! And though I have a biased point of view I dont think I would bump any of the top 10 pictures to make this image place "much higher". 11th place is a VERY respectable finish! Very cute kid btw I love the chubby cheeks! |

Excellent photograph that deserved to place much higher. I like the grayscale feel -- more of a newspaper effect. Great job! Rob 8) |

Yes, this is a GIRL! I chose not to use the color version because her coat is bright red and her pants were bright pink. It just didn't look good, and didn't help the bucket stand out. Also, I chose to crop off the left side because there were some cups and distracting objects on the sidewalk. She actually didn't stay out in the cold for long (not that she wouldn't have because she loved that bell), but she did get some attention and donations for a great cause. I could have just as easily taken a shot of the actual volunteer on duty. However, I think that real journalists look for the best photo ops available to illustrate their story, and this was just a stronger photo. |

Usually cute kid shots don't do too well. This one really works. Great that the subject is NOT looking at the camera. |

Adorable shot of admirable work. I'm glad he got some recognition on this shot. I could see this pic in the paper. It is well framed. i really like his expression and he's 'in action'. The only thing that would make this better is a contributor putting a little money in the bucket. This is a nice representation of people helping the community, regardless of age or size. - Inspzil |

Couldn't you have at least found a cute kid to photograph? Sheesh...Good work, great contrast and great expression. Excellent child labour shot. Those little buggers are good for rounding up cash and really good for tight stitching. Might have been better with a bit of a tighter crop on the right and a bit more room on the left, but that's minor. Nice shot. |

that's a cute kid alright. people with cute kids and/or pets have an unfair advantage over us single apartment dwellers. |

It takes courage to submit a picture of a cute child here... I hope the "kid bashers club" see this shot for what it is (an excellent technical effort that is 100% on target for the challenge) and not just write it off as someone posting a cute shot of their kid... btw ~ Cute Kid :) ~ MyQyl ~ |

Awesome moment, unless of course you bribed the real guy to let you take a picture of YOUR kid :-) I still like the message. 8 nards656 |

Very well done! I'm not usually too keen on "cute kid" pictures, but this is certainly an exception. This could easily have been material for a feature shot in a local newspaper. |

This little guy is freezing, and you are standing there in your down filled coat taking his picture! I hope you buttoned his coat, and then went and got him a cup of hot chocolate. 6 JEM |

this is actually really good. i admit i had only looked at the thumbnail before and not seen what the shot truly consists of. now that i see it's the salvation army with the bell, i realize that, even tho this may be set up, to the vast majority of people this will appear to be an incredibly lucky catch and they will probably rate it quite highly : ) .. i'm just jealous i dont have such a disarmingly cute model at my disposal! : ) .. and as usual, you have a knack for good exposure. mag99 |

This is darling, and something you'd see in a newspaper, or a magazine. The expression on this child really makes the picture. You've included just enough detail to fill in the information. LOVE IT!!! Best of luck in the challenge. Please remember to keep an open mind when voting. Grayce aka Gracious |

Cute kid. I think this image would be more effective in color to accentuate the red collection bucket (if it is red) |
