Hi Linda! Finally I get to critique your photo which was assigned to me by the Critique Club (maybe you read about that in the forum). So here it goes:
Composition: It seems you crouched to take the photo from a lower angle. I think that was a good decision because it puts the viewer on eye level with the girl instead of "looking down" on her. This creates a better relationship and makes the photo much more touching.
The background helps the viewer to understand where the photo was taken but I think it's also quite a bit distracting. There are are a lot of things going on and if I imagine if there was just a plain wall, I think this would put more focus on the girl as your subject. The lamppost however is somehow essential. The chains are good, because they lead the viewers eye to your subject.
I agree with Marsha that it would have been better when you didn't crop the violin case.
Lighting: The lighting conditions are just how they are these days... cloudy, no sun and altogether a bit drab. But this only increases the somewhat sad mood of the girl playing her violin. Exposure is good in my opinion.
Focus: F/2.8 already is a wide aperture but I think a wider aperture could have helped to narrow the DOF and blur the background even more. But I don't know if your camera supports that.
Art: You did a good job capturing a certain mood. It is an interesting photo where I personally ask what's the story behind it. So in my opinion you fulfilled the challenge topic.

| Thank you very much everyone. This was a last minute Sunday shot... the causeway, beneath the Empress where the buskers and craftpeople hang out. The sun had just gone down and it was really chilly after a beautiful sunny day, so we decided to go grab a coffee. Passed this little girl and had to stop for a picture. Her mom and sister were standing beside her. The sister had also played, and this little angel had been playing for about 10 minutes. She was cold and just about to stop and go home... her little fingers were all pink. I don't believe the children were down on their luck, or having to play... from talking to the mom, and seeing the 3 together I think it was simply an opportunity to play in public. And yes Turbotec i defiinitely tipped her, actually stood and talked for a while as there were very few people on the causeway at that late time. |

| If this is real and not staged it is a very touching photo. Great focus and you captured the expresion on her face wonderfully. |

| What an expression. Nice subject and composition. Good execution. Beautiful background - in my opinion adds to the whole photo. The girl by herself is a good portrait. The girl with the background is a great photograph with depth to it. This a a good work of art. PTL9 |

| I don't know what a Busker is.....but........this is done very well. It's a beautiful setting. Where? Boston? Europe? Just love the feeling of her, the post, the water......maybe a bit too dark but easily fixed. Nice work. Justine |

haha thats great.. starting them early! too bad we don't see a few patrons watching or someone tossing in a coin.. might be even better... or maybe not... :o)
