We (myself and Cowtownmom)took the tatertots (the grandkids) and my nephew Teddy to the Ft. Worth Nature Center Saturday morning. This is a nature preserve where most of the animals are allowed to roam relatively freely. After finding some cool looking bugs and landscapes, we finally went to find the bison. Took quite a bit of a hike, and they finally turned out to be at the far backside of their range. We initially spotted them roaming behind a clump of trees and with some patient waiting, the herd eventually came out into the clearing where we could photograph them. There were at least 2 and possibly 3 calves that were born several months ago. We waited at the fence about 40 minutes or so periodically getting some decent shots. I think we burned up too much time earlier in the morning in other areas, so at this late morning hour, the bison were not coming very far out of the shade. Next time we go straight to the bison range when we arrive.
Not anticipating better than a mid-pack placement out of this. Might even bomb out in the 4's, I really don't have a good feel for how this will perform. I just can't seem to coax the wow factor and detail out of this that I want to see in it. Also expect to take some hits for the calf not being as prominent as the mom. Well, that's how nursing a young one looks. If I'd had ability to get closer, filling the frame would have been nice.
Anticipated critiques:
-Harsh sun too much towards midday
-Baby bison is not prominent enough as the subject.
Post-challenge notes:
Well, I'm glad this one is over. I haven't had one do this poorly in a long time. I guess I liked the subject and convinced myself it was ok when it wasn't. I'll put this in the "what was I thinking?" file. |
