Challenge: Puzzle Macro IV (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Canon EOS-5D Mark II
Location: My Marine Fish Tank
Date: Feb 19, 2011
Aperture: 2.8
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/640
Galleries: Animals, Macro
Date Uploaded: Feb 19, 2011

This is a Button Polyp Coral in my Reef Aquarium. It's a "Night time" shot so it's lit by the bluey/purple moonlights on the tank and the Polyps are in the process of going to sleep and so that's why some are closed and others partially open.

Wow!!! A ribbon! Wasn't expecting that at all, that's two in a row now and I have the full set :0)

Ok, so this was taken with my Sigma 105mm f/2.8 Macro lens that I haven't seen for a couple of years as I lent it to my Brother in Law and then to Simms to play with. I got it back off him just to shoot for this challenge so it was worth popping over for it!

PP was very basic, needed quite a crop as these are very small (around half a centimetre a polyp) and obviously with the aquarium glass I couldn't get any closer to the coral. Then boost the contrast, blacks, bit of fill light, clarity, slight increase in vibrance, Vignette. Then out to CS3 for a levels, sharpen, border, save for web

Here is a shot with the Polyps awake

It's a Green Button Polyp of the Zoanthid family, so technically not a Sea Anemone or an LPS coral.

Thanks Again!!

I like them awake too but I thought the mix of the closed and half open Polyps fit the puzzle aspect a little better. Thanks for the comments :0)

Obviously due to my special brand of fairy dust I sprinkled on your lens.. Great finish mate - interesting to see that 1st and 2nd place were similar photos. Well done.

This looks like that sea creature whose name is made up of an unknown order of A's, E's, M's, N's and O's. How did you get the one on the lower right to smile? This is a cool image - 8

It's lovely, but it would not seem very puzzling. Looks like sea anemones or some such critter, viewed with a black light. of course, I could be wrong :-)
