This Oak Tree is located in France, in a Normandie's town called "Allouville-Bellefosse". It is one of the oldest tree in the country, with around 1200 years. Its hollow trunk hosts two chapels, which were built there in 1669: Notre Dame de la Paix ("Our Lady of Peace") and the Chambre de l'Ermite ("Hermit's room"). A spiral staircase around the trunk provides access to the chapels.

As for the photo itself, I do agree that an obvious crop would not include the right wall, nor the left house. However, I wanted to meet the challenge the best I could, and wanted to show some urban related things, hence this angle. As for the distortion, the shot was made with a tilt-shift lens, which is supposedly used to *correct* parallelism problems... but I actually had fun using it the other way: I liked the special atmosphere it gave to the location. It is quite a fun piece of gear!

Thanks all for the great comments and votes!
In all honesty, I would probably never have found this place if it wasn't for DPC: I love how these challenges open your mind and knowledge to new things.

Interesting, but phallic as all hell.

Very cool stuff indeed. The composition and distorted shift you used works so well for this shot.

What a strange place! The skewed perspective and desaturation work well. Congrats on the HM.

What an interesting story (I searched on the web to find out more about this tree.) You've captured the textures well.

This looks like something out of a twisted novel or painting. Wonderful!! Fully expect to see this on the front page! Wish there was a tighter crop though...the slanty building on the right is very distracting. Nonetheless, a 7 from me.

I think it would have been better without the bench and with the correction of the lines, but in any case for me it's an 8

I imagine this was a tricky thing to shoot. Visually, I don't know how much I like how prominently the building on the right factors into things, but I know if you got much closer to the subject it would lose a lot of sense of what it was.

A funky scene enhanced by the funkiness of the wide angle lens. It's a funky word, funky. I don't mean to overuse it. Great shot.
