CRITIQUE CLUB CRITIQUE
by karmat
Composition -- I think the choice of subjects is fantastic. The contrast of the snow and wood is very nice, and is pleasing to look at, in my opinion. I also think the vertical framing works well since the primary structure is vertical in nature. That said, I think it may be cropped a little tight on the left, as it leaves me as a viewer feeling "crowded." I think opening it up just a bit on the left and top would really make this picture jump.
Technique -- You nailed the snow. To me it is exposed perfectly. Blown out spots are minimal, and it looks white, not gray or blue. As mentioned previously, it also sets up a nice contrast with the wood. Focus is awesome as the viewer can see details throughout the picture and the slightly blurry background is effective to allow the main subject to appear even sharper and distinct.
Overall effect -- I think you have chosen a subject (snow) that many people can relate to, and you have done it in a technically sound fasion, so it is pleasing to look at. It does feel tilted a little, and though I realize it probably is standing that way at this very moment, it makes me feel a little disjointed. I don't think tilting will help, because the trees in the background will look awkward then. Expanding the crop, as mentioned before, might help this issue. Nice shot!
Hope this has been of some assistance.

This is a really neat shot. The lighting and composition are great and its showing me what I get to look forward to next month when I leave the heat and move to the cold. |

It's like nature's stonehenge. The snow is glorious. |

It looks to me that you might have accomplished a better shot if you had come in closer and just simply took the picture through the stump, framing the trees with it. The background all around the subject steals your intended image from you. IMO. |

Your capture of the white in the snow is good. It's not blue or oversaturated. The detail in the trunk is crisp. The one drawback I see is that the crop may be to tight. More trunk on the left would be nice. |

Well taken photo! It's a little low interest for me, but photographically, it's fine.

Gorgeous textures. The light is a little harsh. Being Australian, I don't have any experience at all of photographing in the snow, but I think a polariser would help? The framing is very nice. The scene overall is very pleasant and serene. |

I little hot up front on the left I think you need some more contrast. |

Interesting find. I only wish that the left side of the top piece was not cut out of the shot or that the shot was cropped so that you could only see the trees though the hole that is formed and not around the sides. Otherwise nice detail - good exposure on the snow. = 8 |

Unusually, I feel that this photo is a touch too bright, and needs a little more contrast to help add more texture to the (well focused) details of the wood. |

This is a beautiful photo. I would have liked it not cropped so closely, making this appear to be a doorway into the scenery. Just a thought. But it is great the way it is. I really like it. |

Maybe a wider crop would help to put this in some kind of context. It's an interesting shot, but I feel a bit overwhelmed by the subject, |

Beautfilly seen and well photographed. Often times, one does not need to add anything to what the nature creates, but sometimes it's that addition that really makes the picture.
There is only one thing I would have changed, it's the cut-off on the left side of the image; I would have just taken a step back (if possible) and included the whole structure. Nevertheless, a wonderful job! |

Neat shot. Great texture. Only nit is that I wish the log hadn't been cropped off in the top left. DPz |

Hum. I think this shot is okay but has room for improvement. The fact that the left is cut off bothers me. The top is cut off too short. Also the shot is not sitting straight. The light, focus are okay. |

Focus and clarity are great. I like the detail you show us in the wood. The angle and framing/cropping are good. I like the idea behind this shot. It's a very nice snow shot. Good exposure and contrast. Good luck in the challenge. |
