I love fisheye's =). This is my first free study - it's surprisingly hard to pick one photo from a months worth when given absolute freedom!

In the end I just opted for a photo I took a few day ago, perhaps I have others that would score a lot higher, and there is another photo I was really set on submitting the last couple of weeks, but I do love the perspective of this and hope it gets near a 6 (but we shall see =).

Great back story - and congrats on the almost 6/"tiny violin" score, too! Really a unique and enjoyable photograph. Gotta watch for those French guys - just check out that jagar fellow, for instance... :)

Thanks for the comments, a lot of the feedback is very helpful. This image is actually a crop from a fisheye lens with the subject originally centred in the image and the pole on the right hand side - the cropped left side of the image was just empty space with a rather distorted horizon.

That crows-nest-giraffe-feeder-basketball-hoop is actually a signal beacon in case the French invade =). One has stood on this site for hundreds of years and there is a network of these stretching several hundred miles. I believe between the furthest one being lit and the signal reaching naval high command would take around 45 minutes, so in the days before the telephone, pretty effective.

A couple of other photos of the beacon (the first one gives a better idea of where it is in relation to the town):

Wonderful old-timey effect, with a strong touch of Surreal.

I'm going through the entries, stopping at those images I feel have had the benefit of an unconventional eye and dwelling a little longer to try to see and appreciate what you saw. This is one of those images.

Positives: Excellent composition and a well-matched title. I really like the coloration too. The lens distortion makes for a very interesting shot and not one it would have ever occurred to me to try. The overall story is compelling - she really does look small and we wonder why the post captures her attention so completely.

Critical stuff: I think either some additional highlight recovery or a neutral gradient overlay to keep the blown highlights in check might have stopped them detracting from your excellent scene.

Overall: I like this a lot.

The bendy crow's nest is kinda cool, but the bendy horizon line bugs me a little.

Clever use of lens perspective and distortion.

I like the bent effect of what looks like a giraffe feeder, makes it ever more looming (fish eye lense?) The forboding sky, the way she's humbly barefoot on the grass, makes it fit the theme of David and Goliath.

In spite of her parent's encouragement and support, Laura still found high school sports to be overwhelming.

Cool fisheye photo. I see the title as just "O-K"

Cool perspective with the wide angle.

This is interesting. Normally the effects of lens distortion are unwanted (with the obvious exception of fish eye), but in this case it adds a bit of intrigue to the image.

Nice except her head gets a bit lost in the background bush.

This is immense. I don't know if it allowed to apply lens distortion correction, and what would be the impact of this to get rid of the fisheye. Just wondering.

Oh cool. I love the bend of the basket on the pole. What is that anyway?
