Composition: While this photo has a nice tight crop, the attention is very focused on the model's armpit! It almost seems as though the model is struggling to get his face into the photo, perhaps because of the strong line of his arm and the shadows. Maybe a different angle of the same pose could have worked better.

Lighting: There is not too much variation in tones in this B&W. The shadows are fantastic in this photo though and the darkness around the model's eyes is striking. The esp. shiny spot on the model's nose is distracting to me, but maybe I am just being picky! No one else seems to have noticed it judging from your comments.

Focus: There could have been a sharper focus on the model's face as it seems that the sharpest point on this photo are his hairs! His neck also seems to be especially in focus.

Overall Impression : The contrasts between shadow and light are very effective in this shot and overall I think it is a nice photo but with a few touch ups could have had more of a 'wow' factor.

I really like the expression on his face (and the way you've framed it), but this needs to be quite a bit sharper all around. I'm not sure about the pose either, since it seems to feature his armpit rather prominently, and there might be better approaches.

good work

This shot is all about contrast. Light, shadow, soft and hard, smooth and rough. I like the broody look from the model. I also like the diagonal line you created here. 8

The stark line between shoulder/ arm and face does something strange to my perception of the relation between the body parts and almost separates them from each other such that it looks like this guy's face is peering from around the side of someone else's torso. I also think the ratio between arm pit and face isn't balanced well - more face, less pit would focus attention more on the face.

Lke the tight b/w crop.

Color is flat here, you must use more tonal range, it would of made this a lot better, strong character

rough and at the same time soft, the skin , especially in the face, looks soft (noise reduction ?). Good image which in my opinion could have been made stronger, more rough, by showing some more of the body and by a harder contrast and focus.

Looks like the old Marlboro Man from past cigarette ads. Wish his face was in focus.

cropped a little too tight for my tastes

awesome full frame, but his face seems OOF, and that's a shame because the whole image seems to cry out for sharpness given the rugged features of your model and the expression on his face. Also, the conversion to bw seems a bit..flat..tonal range too limited? I am not sure, but its a nice shot.

Setzler Comment:

Some general ratings (1-10): These are some elements that I look for in great photographs, in no specific orderĂ¢€Â¦

Visual Appeal: 3
Subject Appeal: 4
Compositional Appeal: 3
Effective use of color/bw: 4
Creativity: 5
Theme/Storytelling qualities: 5
Title: 6

Additional Comments:

This composition and subject lends itself nicely to b/w. I believe that a little more contrast could be nice also. I also can't determine why you chose not to put this image in sharp focus... maybe its a little motion blur, but a soft focus, even if intended, would contradict your title to some extent.

Extremely powerful image. Raw, earthy, rough, full of textures and emotion. Wonderful job.

What a strong, striking photo! I think it might be considered a stretch for "Nude", but simply too good of an image to ignore!

VERY nice image...reflective of the 1950's off-hollywood films. Perhaos a little more depth of feild, as features of the face are getting lost.
