Sky Scrapersby Dr.ConfuserComment by sidpixel: Hello from the critique club
An interesting image that contributes to the challenge
It̢۪s often difficult to capture the grandeur of the scene before you in a 2D medium such as photography, I can imagine how awe-inspiring the scene was to you at the time. Whilst the lighting is picking up some of the irregular detail in the rock face it just feels a little too harsh and flat, I think an earlier or later time of day may have helped you to achieve your goal better. The vivid blue of the sky is also too dominant it is taking away interest from the landscape itself. This is a tough challenge to do well in but thanks for your contribution. |

Transformer (Box)by Dr.ConfuserComment by sidpixel: Hello from the critique club
An appealing image that contributes well to the challenge
How right you were with your prediction! So, having got over that, your record shot of someone else's art is, as you say, 'this is certainly art' that we are all now able to appreciate so thanks for recording it for our pleasure. There really are some extremely talented street artists out there whose works are there to give us pleasure on a daily basis. I am fortunate enough to experience such pleasure with a nearby building that never ceases to brighten up my day every time I see it. Thanks for sharing. |

Transformer (Box)by Dr.ConfuserComment by tanguera: While the photographed subject may indeed be "art", to me the image is only a photograph of someone else's art, and not "art" itself. |

Transformer (Box)by Dr.ConfuserComment by sfalice: Lots of riotous color here. However, the fact that it is already artwork that you found, it could use a bit more of your own interpretation. |

About Redwoodsby Dr.ConfuserComment by sidpixel: Hello from the critique club
An interesting image that contributes well to the challenge
In terms of the challenge brief your use of focus stacking technique has enabled you to capture all the intricate detail of the cones, the seeds and the grain of the table top to produce an image that has lots of detail, well done. One thing that strikes me about this is although you have side lighting from your window to reveal the textures it still feels somewhat flat, for instance the spur from the lower left cone is much more difficult to discern than I would have expected. It may well be due to the fact that there is a lot of similarity in colour tones that is causing this. Having said all that the table does add a sympathetic and interesting background to the shot to make it overall quite an appealing image. |

Ghosts In The Machineby Dr.ConfuserComment by snaffles: Greetings from the Critique Club!
Wow...that's a library?! I'm already twisting my head around trying to read the titles! Amazing architecture, it must have been a cathedral before, looking at those vaulted ceilings and Gothic arches. Lovely use of leading lines and thirds, the subtle gradients help draw the eye down to the nave, then all the way back to the viewer. Great technical detail, I am guessing you used focus stacking here. I just find this a little static, though, and the voters may have felt the same way.
It is indeed a machine, but where are the ghosts?
I think what would have made this image that much stronger, and all the more pertinent to the viewer with that title, would be to have some students actually there in the library...quite literally, get some of them to come in (promise them beer and pizza ;-) ghosting around during a long exposure, wandering the shelves or hunched at one of those gorgeous desks in study. That would have really launched this image further up the ratings, imnsho.
Hope this helps, feel free to PM me
Susan

Ghosts In The Machineby Dr.ConfuserComment by wbanning: Normally, I'd find the aisle being so centered a distraction, but here it's effective creating a division between the competing linear motion of the left and right sides of the image. Fascinating and well-conceived compostion. |

Where's Waldoby Dr.ConfuserComment by sidpixel: Hello from the critique club
An appealing image that contributes well to the challenge
Thanks to your title we are made to look for ‘Waldo’ or else we probably would have missed him completely and because we find him it gives the whole image a sense of the immense scale of what we are looking at. The inclusion of the figure also makes the image a much more interesting image rather than a landscape alone it comes to life. As a documentary image of the power of nature to weather its surroundings it works well. |
