I shall be rating this challenge by the following criteria:

1 - Not HDR in my opinion

3 - HDR is way over-done, in my opinion

5 - A reasonable use of HDR, but not a very engaging photo, in my opinion

7 - A reasonable use of HDR, and an engaging photo, in my opinion

10 - A fantastic use of HDR, and an out of this world photo, in my opinion

Too weird. I'm not caring for the treatment of this, but I want to make it clear that it's not bad, just personal taste. Are those headphone wires? I'll bet that pot does some interesting things for audio enhancement. You do get a vote on the positive side just for the sheer absurdity of this, however!

Hi from the Critique Club,

You asked for your shot to have an in depth comment from a member of the Critique Club.

This is a lovely family portrait shot. There are a couple of things here, the shirts are a little blown out and the faces are dark. Your sharpness is spot on here, your DOF is great and the colours are really good.

Next time , maybe use a darker shirt and a reflector to bring out the faces a little more.

this is a lovely family shot that I am sure is treasured

Needs more dramatic lighting -- and maybe a nude.

I do like a lot of abstract macro stuff but this isn't really doing it for me really. I think perhaps my problem is maybe that it is not abstract or macro enough. If it was a lot closer, and perhaps with more contrast to bring the texture of the wood out.

Greetings from the Critique Club!

Initial impression: Pretty colours, and I never would have guessed that it was part if a fireplug!

Technical: DOF is good, lighting good. My eye is doing a lot of roving around looking for a focal point. As has been noted there is a lot to look at here. In this challenge, it works well because you want to keep the viewer guessing, but don't use this as a fallback.
Wondering why such a fast shutter speed? A slower shutter, even handheld (see no mention of use of a tripod) could have given you a shot with much more depth and texture, and less reliance on pp tricks.

Artistic: Favourable comments from viewers and a respectable score, who's to argue with that?

Overall: A little too much for me personally in terms of pp, but it did well and it is nice to see the thumb of the hydrant and area you macro'd in on.

Feel free to PM me with any questions,

Susan

Comment by Paul:
OK, I'm going through the Free Study submissions, purposefully finding those images I think are shot with a less conventional eye - this is one of those images! Thanks for offering something that isn't just DPC friendly eye-candy (though of course there's nothing wrong with eye-candy):

Positives: If I consider this image within the context of its original purpose (abstract macro), I can see that it is reasonably effective in offering an interesting texture to look at - in fact this might be a great image to use as an overlay.

Critical stuff: Try as I might, I can't talk myself into being a fan of this image. Technically, the focus/ DOF and the apparent chromatic aberration are distracting and artistically I'm just not convinced there's enough going on to engage a viewer.

Overall: I'm afraid I'm not a fan, I'm going to 'fess up and let you know that I'm going to give a well considered but nonetheless harsh 2. Sorry.
