Tried some pencil pics myself and couldn't get anything appealing to the eye. You captured it perfectly. What's the blueish color in the top left corner? Shadow? Either way, high remarks from me. Congrats and good luck. |
| 08/15/2002 12:23:00 PM | A New Addictionby lamedosComment: I totally understand the message being portrayed here, but I am not sure I like the presentation of it. The needle seems really harsh and kind of scary. There are other addictions that seem less nasty. I think that comparing a drug addict to any of us DPChallengers is kind of degrading. It's like saying that I used to be a heroine addict, but now I take pictures and post them on this web site. I know that's kind of what you were trying to portray, but I don't think any of us can relate to this particular comparrison. Chocolate, now there is a more realistic transition. I use to be addicted to chocolate, but now it's DPC all the way. I could be misunderstanding this, but I definately think a less harsh addiction would have been more appropriate. Setting that aside, I like how the addictions are lit up and there seems to be nothing else in the world but those addictions. (portrayed by the darkness) Maybe if you set the old addiction in the background a bit, and lighted just the new addiction, it would seem like the old addiction was slipping away into oblivion and the new addiction was completely taking over. Good luck with the challenge. |
| 08/18/2002 11:26:00 PM | A New Directionby lennierComment: I understand the reference to new in this challenge. It's not very visually appealing though with the dead grass, the rusting sign and lack of color. the blur in the bottom makes it look like it was taken out the car window. The angle, lighting and idea are all great with this photo though, so my opinion doesn't really account for much, more like just an observation. Good luck with the challenge. |
| 08/12/2002 11:36:00 PM | New Blueby goodtimecharleeComment: This stuff was DISCUSTING!!! LOL. Thanks goodness this is a visual challenge, not a taste test. The light is a little bright. I have seen where people put a thin cheese cloth, or tissue paper between the light source and the subject and it makes it a lot less direct and bright. just got to be careful if you try it, to try not to put it where it makes silly shadows. Also, (and I could be wrong) you can't make out any actual image, but it appears to be some skin reflection in the bottom right corner. I've never thought about this before, so YOU actually helped ME on this one, maybe try to dress in a similar color to what you are photographing to avoid different colored reflections. Sorry it seems like I'm tearing you apart, but I really like the photo and i'm giving it an above average rating. Great job and good luck in the challenge! |

No clouds, no trees, not even air plane smoke. Absolutely beautiful. I get the reference to something new. I like how there is that little bit of tree to the left and I like how the main line goes straight up the center of the photo. Absolutely excelent work with a camera. Congrats and good luck in the challenge. |
| 08/15/2002 02:02:00 AM | Monetary Reformsby stephanComment: I like this, and I like how you have the newest coin lit, second partially lit and oldest somewhat dark. What could have made this better is if the coins were all laying in the same direction. They seem to be staggered. Also, the photo doesn't appear to be a direct shot from the top, it looks like it was taken at a slight side angle, this making the coins not look completely round, but somewhat "squished" looking. If you aren't quite sure what i'm talking about...a pringles can lid (those are potato chips just in case you don't have them where you're from) is the exact same size as the oldest coin in your photo. This is, if the photo is in the large form as seen on this commenting page. If you place the pringles lid over the oldest coin directly onto the computer screen, you can see that the coin does not appear to be perfectly round, implying that the photo was taken at a slight angle. Now, I KNOW this is VERY picky, but maybe something to think about when taking pictures from the top. Setting my pickyness aside, I rated this photo high, and wish you the best of luck in the challenge. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 08/18/2002 03:56:00 PM | A New Stage of Lifeby lecalanComment: Very nice. I love the background. It makes your subject stand out nicely. This one is similar to the tomato worm photo in that the newness is symbolized by a stage in growth. The lighting is great. There may be a little too much dead space at the bottom. Maybe crop off the flower in the bottom right that the broken stem is attached to. Other than that, this photo is excelent. Good job and good luck in the challenge. |
| 08/18/2002 11:27:00 AM | new born orchidby brent matsuoComment: This is pretty neat. I like the close up, and the lighting is great. WIsh we could see something done about the background. Maybe, since the majority of the photo is green, you could put some green leaves, like on a branch or something behind the flower to make the background flow and make it all the same. Just something to hide the house and fence. I like the placement of the flower in the photo. Nice job and good luck with the challenge. |

| 08/18/2002 03:59:00 PM | The novelty of being alive...by mscott821Comment: Hey! I have one of these! Every day is something new. If this little guy is anything like mine, then he is never the same boy 2 days in a row. I like the angle of this, and the lighting is good. There seems to be a soft focus, but it works with this photo. Kind of dreamy. Great shot and good luck in the challenge. |
